I’ve been here for over a year now, and I still am overwhelmed, every day, by the kindness and goodness of others on this team!! That has made a world of difference for me. I was reading the comments on the Biggest Looser article about marathon running and saw your post. You and I have the same spine! Mine was made even worse by 3 C sections that have permanently compromised my core strength. My back has disintegrated and compressed to the point where it puts constant pressure on the nerves down my legs so I have constant leg and back spasms. I have days where one leg gives out completely and have had to use a cane about 40% of the time.
I've been going back and forth with Kaiser for the last 6 years to find options better than surgery. Finally, as a last ditch effort I tried an osteopathic massage therapist. She used to be a physical therapist and combines osteopathic manipulation and an almost Thai kind of massage with stretching and strengthening exercises. Along with seeing her every 2 weeks, I bought a wild looking contraption called a Yoga swing. I have been using it to do gentle inversion, and somehow, the combination of my normal exercise routine, the massage, exercises, and stretching from the swing have really really made a difference.
Seriously for the first time in YEARS I can get out of bed with my boys in the morning with out gritting my teeth against the ever present back pain. Don't get me wrong, I still take a fairly heavy anti-inflammatory daily and multiple supplements to help maintain what's left of my spine, but the combo of the swing and the new massage has been just amazing. I'm sure this sounds slightly crazy, but I read your profile and felt compelled to let you know what was saving me. Good luck, and stick to it. Leah 4082 days ago
