Hello. My name is Patti and I live in Maryland. My interests are Drawing, Painting, Arts & Crafts, Crocheting, Singing, Writing Poetry and DDR. I have my own Karaoke/DJ business called Toadally Karaoke. I enjoy meeting and talking to new people! Please feel free to contact me.

A Little Bit About Why I Started SparkPeople:

I started SparkPeople back in 2008. At that time, I just wanted to get in shape and lose a few pounds. My life-long struggle with Grave's Disease had me on a rollercoaster with weight-loss and weight-gain. I never really felt "good" - most days I was just trying to maintain. Well, things with the new lifestyle change were going good and then health issues reared it's ugly head once again. I was over-stressed, under-rested and broken - Depression had taken hold. My solution was to take the easy way out...and Quit!

But you know what they say, "Life Goes On - With or Without You!"

In 2010, I started really feeling ill. Current weight at the time was 160 lbs. I saw every doctor who put me through every test (and then some), and still didn't have an idea of what was wrong. Without diagnosis, my PCP decided that it was due to my current medication. *My symptoms were classic of a Mini-Stroke or TIA. After several more tests, it was classified that I was suffering from Hemiplegic Migraines and I needed to stop taking my current medication for sure. Then only problem was this was the medication that was keeping another medical condition in check...Endometriosis.

Between my PCP and OB/GYN...they decided what was best. At 34, I had my first surgery - a tubal ligation, that was suppose to take the place of my BCP. The choice never bothered me, since I was told that my chances of having a child of my own body was grim. I had no children yet, but I always figured that my options were open to adoption. Surgery, I was told, went well and they sent me home. Over the next couple of days, I started feeling worse, so I called the doctor who brought me back in for more testing. Once again, the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. My mind raced with scary thoughts of, "What if they left something inside me that shouldn't be there" and "What if something else is wrong?" You hear all the horror stories of people catching flesh-eating diseases in Operating Rooms in hospitals all over the world. It was a real possibility and I was scared.

The first surgery led to another surgery only weeks later in December 2010...only to find nothing, but something was really wrong. My stomach started swelling! The distension was alarming and the pain was becoming unbearable. Doctors didn't seem to want to do anything about it - I felt alone. Months went by, still more doctors and more testing. Finally, the answer was I needed a third surgery - this time it was my gallbladder. Back into surgery I went in March 2011. After this surgery, I still was in severe pain, my stomach was still distended and I still was suffering from Hemiplegic Migraines. Nothing had changed after three surgeries and the worst part was it didn't look very promising either.

Finally, the one test that doctors neglected to perform was the test that revealed the truth. A simple sonogram. Endometriosis had spread like wildfire once my BCP was discontinued. A tumor was located in-utero and was actually causing my body to "think" it was pregnant! I had every last symptom of pregnancy...except the actual baby growing inside. Instead, I had a TUMOR that was growing, and at a rapid pace.

The only course to take at this point was to have a fourth surgery...a full hysterectomy. I was so tired of being sick and in pain, I think I would have went along with just about anything to get my life back. At 205 lbs., the heaviest I have ever weighed in my life, I went for surgery #4 in November 2011 with the promise from my surgeon that "he would make me better."

Surgery was a success!

All the pain was gone...I almost didn't know how to act. 20lbs. of weight went with surgery right off the bat. Scary!

After all this, I made the decision that I needed to take better care of myself. I don't ever want to go through another least for a LONG while!

As soon as my recovery period was over and I got medical clearance from my doctors, I signed back on to SparkPeople.

I started my 2012 weight-loss journey at 185lbs. and with a new outlook on life. Little-by-little, I did a little bit more exercise and tried new things in the gym. At this time, I didn't really decide to eat healthy, but I thought that I would try to eat less portions. Over the past three months, I have slowly settled into a whole new lifestyle. I gave up drinking soda (Mountain Dew was my drink of choice), healthy food options took the place of burgers, sweets gave way to fresh fruits and I found exercise can really be fun!

What I love about SparkPeople is the structure. This may only be an online site, but you really feel the love and support. The SparkTeams are stellar - I don't know what I would do without the daily huddle and inspiration that flows throughout the site. It's truly remarkable.

Thank you, SparkPeople
and Thank you to all that make this site worthwhile!!
