ACCOMPLISHMENTS and GOALS MET since joining SparkPeople

Quit smoking (12/08/06).

My first children's picture book, Trockle, was published by 4RV Publishing in April 2008. My second children's book, A Puppy, Not a Guppy, was published in 2009. A New Leaf for Lyle was released in 2014. (See Amazon.)

My son and I went camping with some terrific friends at Lassen Volcanic National Park in 2008, where we hiked and ate and prayed the bears wouldn't get us. We need to get out more - and I do mean OUT. That was a fun, active, healthy trip.

I was diagnosed in 2010 with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), or early-stage breast cancer. Believing in the "kill a spider with a 2x4" and use a flame-thrower on it just to be SURE" theory, I opted for BMX and DIEP reconstruction, and I have been cancer-free ever since 2011.

UPDATE 2011: Did you know that boobs weight about 5 lbs., total? Moving the ab flab up a foot doesn't actually reduce anything. And hospital food isn't all that bad. That's my happy way of saying I didn't really lose an OUNCE, despite a 12-hour surgery.

UPDATE 2013 or so: That was back in 2011/2012. Well, gee - isn't every day just Groundhog's Day around here? :)

EXCUSE #679391: I broke my ankle in 2015. Running, hopping - out of the question until recently. I asked the therapist, "What am I supposed to be running FROM? That might have some bearing on my motivation and ability... maybe." When going down stairs left-foot, right-foot, left-foot, right-foot is a cause for celebration, it's easy to make excuses about actual EXERCISE.

UPDATE #70-11: Jen asked me to lead a newbie SparkTeam! Hahahaha... okay, now I have to be all inspirational and stuff, which actually increases my odds of reaching my own goals, because I hate setting a bad example, even if I can rationalize it (like all good parents) with "do as I say, not as I do" and "well, wouldn't you just hate me if I were perfect?" I can do this. Go, class of August 28- September 3, 2016, wherever you are!! (Yes, tell your friends to sign up at the end of the month - we're going to rock this place and have some fun!)

UPDATE #Bazillion: Nice to be back on the SP Community Team and meeting lots of new friends. Down 40 pounds from my highest weight, and... probably still up about 10 from the first time I joined SparkPeople. I should go check that - see if that's accurate. 15 more, and I will see a shiny new digit in the hundreds place...

UPDATE #Bazillion-and-Ten: I don't know why I struggle so with "maintenance." On second thought, I've gotten fairly good at it - I'm just not maintaining at my GOAL WEIGHT yet. Can we call this a "non-scale victory"? I'm happy - did not let being 80 lbs. overweight stop me from enjoying the sea, sun, and sand in Maui two weeks ago - in a bathing suit - on a snorkel tour. Even tried SCUBA diving! I was waiting to board the snorkel tour when I got a robocall reminding me of an appointment (the next day) with my orthopedic surgeon (did I mention I'd had a disc fusion and an artificial disc replacement in my neck at the end of January?) Anyway, I called from the dock to tell them I was blowing them off and why. They seemed surprisingly happy to reschedule that appointment!

Now, to get serious (again) about shedding that 80 lbs.

I'm going be have a grandchild to keep up with in a few months!

UPDATE #They-haven't-invented-numbers-that-high-y
et: I have the most adorable grandson. Unfortunately, he and his parents have moved halfway across the country - to Portland, OR, of all places. During a pandemic. My poor girl - never has done anything "the easy way," but it has helped to make her a force to be reckoned with. Thought it would be cooler. Thought the air would be fresher. Maybe she should just stand in front of the fire line, hold her hand up, and tell the flames to go right back to Hell where they came from.

I took early retirement in April. Unfortunately, my timing sucks. My plans for extensive travel, hiking, exercise, and not sitting around on my behind were laughed at by a pandemic-ridden universe. FINE. Whatever. Slump OVER, because I declare it so (you see, now, where my daughter gets it, right?) I have accepted that this is the "new normal" for now, and I'll be damned if, when I die, they have to order an XXL coffin.

OK, that sounded way more negative than I'm actually feeling - and besides, I've told the fam to cremate me and scatter me over the Atlantic off Daytona. From a parasail. In the sunshine. And I'd hate to weigh them down and get them dragged along behind a boat in shark-infested waters.

Don't worry - I plan to live to 100. I'd like to do it with my own knees. That's why I'm here.

My Goals:
Reach my goal weight of 170 by July 2021.

Make a habit of good nutrition, water, sleep, vitamins, and regular exercise;

Organize and simplify my life, so I can concentrate on the people and activities that really matter.


My Program:
My diet and exercise program involves consuming 1200 and 1550 calories per day; drinking eight glasses of water a day; taking a multivitamin; and, getting at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise and strength training 3-5x per week. I've added "walk 5-8 miles each Saturday and Sunday" for an overall goal of about 15 miles per week. I still struggle with that on workdays. My sleep goal is six to seven hours a night.

    OK, OK. I've uploaded a profile image. Figured I'd stay with the fish theme. Seems appropriate since aquariums are my latest pet-related project. Yes, that was plural (don't ask). This week is going OK. I still continue to struggle with food, especially on the weekends. I've embraced the whole excercise thing and will take your advice about adding variety. Your advice about water and breakfast was sound so you have high credibility in my book ;) For now I will do lots of cardio and add strength training later. I need to shed a few pounds for motivation. Glad your trainer worked well. I'd love to go but can't really see squeezing it into my schedule. For now excercise at home is working for me. Here's to a fabulous week!

    Hi there. Thanks for noticing my spark page. I'm hoping to fill it out today or tomorrow. I took your advice about breakfast and water and it has paid off! Given the effort it took to religiously drink 64 oz of water there is no way I was coming close. SW was 197 and this morning my scale says 192! As I mentioned I go to WW and lost a brilliant 3lbs in the first 12 week session. Last weigh-in I was down 2.2 lbs from the week before. I'm trying not to be a slave to numbers sine they have dissapointed me before. I've lost a bit of momentum (work got in the way) but I'm hoping to regain it this weekend.

    Alrighty, babe. Here I go. Food log pulled up before I take a bite, off to get my first big cup of water for the day, planning on a healthy sandwich for lunch.

    We're doing this, and with Wonder Woman as my witness, I WILL not wear a size 16-18 maid of honor dress this April! I will be able to get out of bed without groaning. I will be able to bend over to get my shoes on without puffing.

    All the list discussion got me to login in to sparkpeople. I've been a member for some time but figured actually participating might give me better results than just deleting the daily emails. Anyhoo, I've got a long road but time will pass regardless and I'd rather be thinner and healthier as it does. Thanks for the inspiration. -Asli
