I'm Kat. I could say I've struggled with my weight all my life, but it's more about my self-worth. I'm not sure when I decided that being fat meant I was lesser. But, I know that I've felt fat as far back as I can remember. I have a twin sister (nearly identical looking prior to middle school), and my mother has always said that she could tell us apart because I was the one with the chubby face. Started really gaining weight until I was eight (hah, weight, eight). It fluctuated while I was in grade school, but I was up to 200 lbs and a size 18 before I graduated high school. My weight has fairly steadily risen since then.

Every so often I would look at the scale, realize I was the heaviest I'd even been and start exercising again. I first got this account back in 2011, when I was feeling particularly down about my self worth and the way my weight tied into that. And eventually forgot about it.

It's 2016 now, and I'm feeling much better about myself and ready to take on the challenge of getting healthier and losing some weight. I made friends during grad school who weren't afraid of going out and doing stuff, despite their weight. I've become more confident in myself and a little less anxious. I feel good about my chances.

Fitness Minutes: 7,302

My Goals:
Short term goals

* Exercise minimum of 10 minutes each day.

* Track calories and nutrition each day.

* Eat at least 3 servings of fruits/vegetables every day.

* Drink 8 8oz glasses of water each day

* Walk a 5K.

Long term goals

* Run a 5K in the next 6-12 months.

* Run with Pilot (the dog) in the Rocky Dog Trail Run within two years.

* Keep up with my sisters.

* Be able to wear my twin sister's clothes (size 14-16). Drive her nuts. Possibly 'borrow' clothes, if her clothing choices have gotten any better.

* Be able to climb trees! When out geocaching, be 'volunteered' to be the tree climber.

* No more jockspurs!

* Get healthy, lose weight, make my family proud/mom stop worrying.

My Program:
At least 10 minutes / day -- relatively simple, because I try to walk the dog every single day, sometimes twice a day. My new apartment has a fitness center, and I will be doing my best to get in there at least three times a week. Most likely using the elliptical machine (since I like that I can work on my arms at the same time) or the treadmill. Once I feel more comfortable with exercise, I'll start working in some strength training. Most likely without equipment, because weight training is intimidating as hell. I would like to eventually, at some point, take some classes (maybe at the Y?) on how to swim or dancing. It would be nice to mix things up a bit, and those are both activities I was desperate to learn as a child and think I'll enjoy.

Personal Information:
Kat: librarian on the front range in Colorado. Best friends with an extremely intelligent and mischievous Labrador named Pilot. Has three amazing sisters -- two older and one bratty twin sister. Formerly of Iowa. Likes reading fantasies and comic books (Batgirl is the best!), geocaching, watching horror movies and musicals.

    I was told I was pre-diabetic awhile ago and also have a fatty liver. I was quite sedentary and kept gaining weight that I couldn't seem to get off. I was tired of not having any energy and always being tired. I decided I was the only one who could make a change so I decided to join Sparkpeople and joined the BLC (Biggest Loser Challenge) summer challenge. I also joined an online program for fitness and nutrition for seniors (Grow Young Fitness). In the past 2 months since I joined I've lost 8 pounds, am no longer tired and have more energy. I also feel much better about myself. I track my food and exercise on the SP site. I do not have much will power but these 2 programs have held me accountable. emoticon emoticon

    I would expect a Labrador to believe pool night IS the best day of the year. My Molly has never passed an opportunity to be in water -- except for the kiddie pool I bought her. I'm glad Pilot got passed that illness.

    Blind Date with a Book -- what a great title!! A nice chance to read something different. I joined our library's book club as well as a book team here on Spark precisely to get myself to read outside my comfort zone. I don't always read the books or take part in the discussion even if I read the book but it has made me read some very enjoyable books I would not have picked up on my own.

    Glad you're back. Keep pushing. Nothing happens unless you do that.

    I don't know if I thanked you for recommending Dog Songs. I don't read poetry usually but these were made for me. Beautiful poems. Made me cry a few times. Thanks again!!

    How are you? How is Pilot?
