I joined SparkPeople on Feb. 8, 2014. A book I was reading recommended "The Spark" & I reserved it from the local library. Kept reading the book, came to this website & decided to check the program out -- I liked what I saw. My downfall was/is portion control -- I could eat too large a portion of even good, healthy food.

I live in a suburb outside of Cleveland, Ohio with my dear DH -- we will be celebrating our 54th Wedding Anniversary in November. Married children have stayed in the area & have enjoyed being a grandparent & helping out wherever & whenever needed. Daughter, her DH & the two granddaughters live in the same county.

Estranged son, DIL, one granddaughter & one grandson live in another county only thirty minutes away. Had a very close loving relationship with them -- then six years ago they decided to "not be associated" with any of our family. Heartaches over the situation but hope & pray someday we can be reconciled.

In my younger days I could eat anything & not gain weight (high metabolism). Then raising a family, working full-time, attending college while the two kids were also in college, DH had odd hours as a fireman & I wasn't taking care of my own health. The extra pounds came very gradually, but I would lose some weight, then the same pounds would come back with a few more pounds.

The busy life continued, I developed knee & back problems (have had arthritis for many years) & had to have total knee replacements. I'd been on Celebrex for arthritis for too long & then developed a whole in my esophagus & almost bled out & nearly died in ICU.

In 2013, after much discomfort & increasing pain I had to make the decision to face back surgery. I would push myself to do things, but finally the pain was getting out of control. A neurosurgeon at Cleveland Clinic was the answer to my prayers. The surgery went well although the recovery was tougher than I thought it would be & took longer than the knee replacements.

Now it is April, five months later & I faithfully do one hour of physical therapy exercises every day -- life is good. The exercises have been strengthening my abdominals the "core muscles" which are needed to support the spine. Naturally losing weight through portion control & a healthy lifestyle will be very beneficial to my total recovery.

My Goals:
50 lbs./Nov. 2014
I will take 41 weeks @ 1.2+ lbs. a week to reach & maintain a healthy weight loss. Slowly & steadily it is happening & by setting realistic goals -- success will be more attainable.

My Program:
Start each day with 60 min. of physical therapy exercises at home & walk at the local rec. center. Had back surgery in Nov. 2013 & medical advice is to use common sense & not overdo.
I like using the Nutrition & Exercise Trackers.
Portion Control & the discipline of its use allows me to enjoy any food in moderation.

Enjoy being a grandmother -- it sure is a lot of fun -- they teach me something new all the time!
Enjoy reading non-fiction, especially on my Kobo e-reader, spending hours at the public library & on home computer, gardening, sewing, knitting, activities with family & friends & watching sunsets.
