Thanks a lot! It's taken me since then end of April to get to where I'm at now, but I've had a couple slips up along the way to blame for some slow progress (gaining back ~5lbs when I got a little less focused, and then reaching a plateau for a little while).

The thing that's doing it for me is keeping track of my calorie intake and portion control! It seemed a little tedious at first to have to keep track of it all, but now I know a lot of it off my head and it's not so much of an issue. I did some research to find out how many calories a day it takes to maintain my current weight (which right now is about 2000 calories). Then with a little more digging around, I discovered that if you subtract 500 calories from your intake, you can lose a pound every week. So that's my goal! I strive for around 1500 calories a day, and it's actually not really all that hard. In fact, now that I know a lot of the calorie counts for things, it's really easy for me to turn to healthier alternatives.

The other thing, of course, is exercise. I still have trouble with this - getting motivated, etc. But! I have made the commitment to walk my dog everyday - not only for my heath, but for hers too! Every once in a while when I get motivated, I'll do some strength training or maybe watch a yoga video, but the walk with my dog is a constant. I've noticed a difference too! I tend to loose a little more than a pound a week if I'm making sure to take her for a walk everyday.

I weigh myself every Wednesday and this past week I went down 2 pounds! Trust me, once you start going and the pounds start coming off, that is the biggest motivation! I would suggest taking some before pictures! I've been taking pictures at every 10lbs I loose. It's amazing to go back and look at the progress I've made, since sometimes it's hard to look in the mirror and see it. When I look at those pictures though, it really helps motivate me to keep going!

I hope you can find something that works for you! If you ever want some advice, need a little motivation, or even just need to talk about anything - feel free to to let me know! It is always SO much easier when you have a friend to keep you on track! :)

    emoticon Greetings and emoticon back!!

Congrats on taking the next step to reaching a healthier you by getting active with SparkPeople - it's a great community, wonderful resources and fantastic support- it's also lots of fun and easy to make friends because we're all in this together.
I like the way a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE is emphasized here instead of a 'quick fix wonder diet' so it's good for people wanting to lose weight, but also to maintain a previous loss, get healthier, improve fitness and many other goals including gaining weight or saving money - it's about waaaaaay more than 'just' losing weight so you have definitely come to the right place! You're off to a great start already, just by posting here and I think you'll be at your goal before you know it!
Another nice thing about SparkPeople is that we have permission to be human - we don't have to change everything at once or be in a hurry to reach our goals. Take a few baby steps and then a few more and before you know it, you'll have completed a long journey - I hope you enjoy this community as much as I have - it teaches us how to make positive lifetime changes because that's the only thing that will work over time!
Please check out SparkTeams - you can choose them by age group, lifestyle or interests, geographic location or several other ways. I'd like to invite you to join the Virtual Walk/Run/Cycle Thru the US @ exercise.lbl.gov SparkTeam - it's a really fun way to track your walking while you travel 'virtually' across America from Virginia to Oregon. Go to the SparkTeam page at www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/groups_i
    ndividual.asp?gid=19805 for more information.
Some of the other teams that are good for beginners include the Official 10-minute Daily Exercise Streak Challenge, Starting Over Weekly Mini-Challenge Team, 10k Steps A Day and Motivation & Positive Attitude Plan - but there are so many to choose from, you can have a great time looking for the ones that seem to fit you best! In fact, I suggest joining more than one group, post your intro there and write blogs as often as you can - you will find tons of friends and support that way, I promise!!
If you ever need any help using features of the site, there are tutorial videos under the HELP section that can show you how to use the features of the site. You can also find them on the START page and several other places on the site. It takes awhile to get the hang of the site but you can earn SparkPoints and Trophies while you explore and learn!
I wish you the best on your journey!!!
