2020 hit hard. I mean, that COVID-19 was a real 19 for me. Just kidding. It was more like 25. I'm not mad at myself for completely letting go this year - it was a hard year. I'm fortunate to have not faced any of the most serious repercussions of this year that so many have, so I will take what I can.

I loved my job and was on top of the world going into 2020. January and February of this year were two of the best months of my life - speaking at major functions, including the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, casually dating in a positive way, traveling, socializing. Life was right where I wanted it to be and felt like it was only going to get better as I worked on projects I was excited about with people I respected.

When the pandemic first hit and we all thought we just had to hunker down a few weeks, I thought I'd take the chance to focus on my health. Early on, I was getting at least 13,000 steps a day in (usually via a 5 mile or more run) and was cooking nutritious meals. By June, I was doing well physically. But mentally I was falling apart. My CEO quit in April and work was a disaster, plus remote work was never going to be something I enjoyed. I get my work energy from meetings and conversations and real goals - not from boring webinars and Zoom calls or sitting in yoga pants all day. I live alone and the isolation was starting to really get to me. I got a puppy, which was the best decision I ever made - Pepper is the best companion ever.

But a puppy wasn't enough. When things started opening back up, I looked forward to sitting in parks drinking and snacking with friends or eating and drinking on patios. In fact, it was the only thing I looked forward to. By mid-summer my career was in shambles, but I kept telling myself that because I still had a paycheck I was lucky so I couldn't be upset. In early September, my company was acquired in one of the most unprofessional, degrading transitions of all time. Now I was without severance, health insurance, or a paycheck and I became depressed. Not the kind of depression where you're sad all day. Just the kind where you don't want to do anything at all. I gained weight rapidly in this period - literally 20 lbs from Sept-Dec.

I was fortunate enough to secure another job within 5 weeks, but it didn't start for 5 more after that. The time off would have been great if I could have traveled or seen friends or enjoyed things, but in 2020, it was just a lot of time spent on the couch depressed. Sure, I should have used the time to golf or get back into running, but I didn't have the motivation. So I sat around and got fat.

Now returning from a lovely and supportive time with family for the holidays, and a month into a new job that will be exciting and interesting - with far more potential to grow than the last one, I'm ready to reset. I don't love starting a new job from my (very small) condo, but it will end. And when it's time to go back to the office and meet my new colleagues for real - I will not be an overweight slug.

So here we are again Sparkpeople. You've helped me before and I know you'll help me again. Everything in 2020 was sudden and unexpected and made things worse. But I'm going into 2021 ready for it and making amends with myself for falling into bad patterns during a year turned upside down. I'm not buying a new sized up wardrobe. I'm not living my life feeling like my body is made out of movie theater popcorn butter. I'm going to get back to the person I was a year ago.

My Goals:
I just want to get back to a healthy body and do it the right way. When I was in my early twenties, I would starve myself thin any time I felt like I gained weight. I looked good, but it wasn't the right way to get there. In fact, it probably messed up my metabolism for life - I gain weight very easily. I know I need to commit to the whole life style change concept and not focus on food as comfort for everything.

I'm always looking to better myself, to achieve more. Being in the right, healthy mindset is a great place to start.

My Program:
I'm trying to cut down on unnecessary carbs - keeping carbs to fruits and veggies, whole grains, etc. In that same vein, I'm eating a lot of protein - chicken sausage, turkey, pork.

I make a ton of veggies with whatever I cook because I like to eat large quantities and that helps me to not feel like I'm going to run out of food. What a fatty - I'm afraid to run out of food.

Personal Information:
I love singing, writing, music, cooking, baking (trying to keep away from that one) and making sarcastic comments.

I work in health care policy and it sure is an interesting time to be in that field!

Other Information:
I really don't like carrots. Seriously. They are gross.

The challenge consists of 11 Teams, that participate in 10 weeks of Nutritional and Fitness Challenges. Here are some of the members comments written on a Survey Monkey poll:

β€œIt helps me stay focused on my goals. It also keeps things interesting and not boring.”

β€œI find that the challenges make me be more cognizant of my food intake, better choices etc. The fitness ones encourage me to try new exercises and to keep doing exercises. I think there is a good possibility I wouldnt do as much if I didnt track it for challenges or tried to do better on challenges”

β€œMy leaders are all wonderful...they stay in touch with team members and do their best to keep us involved and feeling a part of the team.”

β€œThey motivate me to eat healthier and to be more active. β€œ
