Hi, I'm Valerie from Portland, OR. The quick low-down on me is that I'm a mom, a wife, a quilter, and a martial artist. And most recently, I've also become a runner! Quite an interesting combination, don't you think? LOL!

My journey with SparkPeople has been an amazing one. When I started, I was about 40 pounds heavier than I should have been. Two young children and a lack of understanding of my bad eating habits left me overweight, out of energy, and wondering what had happened to me.

About 4 or 5 years ago, I decided something had to change. That I was doing something wrong. After all, I was taking Taekwondo classes and exercising 3-5 times a week. There was no reason I should still be overweight! Or was there? I finally realized that all the exercise in the world won't help you unless you are also eating right. If calories in is greater than calories out, you're in trouble.

With the help of SparkPeople's nutrition tracker, I began to watch my food intake. What a wake up call this was! It's so easy to underestimate the number of calories in food. Now that I have a better understanding, I'm confident that going forward I can maintain my weight and my health.

* Maintain my current weight and health.

* Gain muscle tone and strength, especially in my core. Gotta have awesome abs! :)

* Continue running and increasing my speed and distance so I can run in a 10K in November 2010.

* I go to the gym 2-3 times per week. I worked with a trainer to develop a program, which I'm now following.

    Plus her lack of comprehension-- her anger seemed to come because she couldn't understand...that alone (plus the demeanor). Just weird.

    I was embarrassed to share (why I didn't talk about it earlier) but thought, no! This needs to be out there!

    I just never thought about it being closed up in there ya know, for a year plus. Ew!!

    Mum insists eating peanut butter and whole wheat are good for her -- cos that's what the FDA purports (and even SP). It's BS. It's not good for everybody and it's even in question if it's GOOD for anybody!

    While that's better than eating curly fries (perhaps), it's damaging to those with autoimmune and truly anybody. But if your system is compromised, all these 'tough on the gut' items are just sandblasting our poor guts!

    Not saying I don't OPT for some unhealthy choices (mmmm, mojitos -- and even popcorn) but I *know* it's unhealthy.

    But thanks. Yup, this article I posted shows it's damaging EVERYBODY. And of course, if you're Celiac, it's doing more than what the symptoms seem to show.

    My mother is proof that ignoring it has led to so many life-threatening health issues. She has accumulated heart disease, killed her pancreas, gone onto Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis... The list goes on.

    She's only 80lb and that's with us TRYING to get weight on her. It's not that she's been fat and sloppy. She has never been those things. She does NOT make lifestyle changes appropriate to diagnoses, though. She prefers to use meds. At the most, it was 18 (following her quadruple bypass surgery). Just ONE med costs $1800 a month.

    But all of this is easier than modifying lifestyle?
