A big success is merely the sum of many small but critically important successes. Today, I had to fasten my watch strap on the fourth hole instead of the third!
We’re on vacation this week but so far I’ve been able to maintain my calorie deficit goal. I brought the gear to cook healthy (food scale, Instant Pot, sous vide circulator, spiralizer...) but I didn’t bring my weigh scale so I have no way to track that for a week. Hoping for a pleasant surprise when we get home! (Picture to make the post interesting)
Relaxing on vacay!
Challenge met! #H2Whoa
Zoodles!
Sous Vide London Broil- season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Vacuum seal the bag, cooked for 9 hours at 139.5 degrees. After cooking, 45 second sear on each side. Let rest for 10 minutes and then carve. 168 calories per 4 oz serving.

The vacation is great but I’m missing the dogs
When breakfast is a 4-shot Americano (no sugar or cream)…. Heart palpitations are a form of calisthenics, right?? 🤣🤣🤣
Heading home tomorrow morning from our week long family vacation in Michigan. As much as I don’t want to go, kinda excited to step on a scale for the first time in a week and see how I did.
Thrilled! Got back from vacation and stepped on the scale. Lost two pounds over the week!
Good morning!
Asking for a friend...
Finally understanding and accepting this was my gift to myself several years ago.
I can neither confirm nor deny that this may be - or may not be - how I possibly feel right now...
Seriously, help a guy out!
Morning coffee and meditation. Hope everyone has a great day
My daughter won first place in the youth division of a local flower and garden show in the category of Creative Arrangement Using Natural Materials. She called it "Two Seasons Meet".
Tonight’s dinner: sous vide brats and spiralized beet noodles being roasted on the grill.
UPDATE: roasted the beet noodles on the grill with olive oil, salt and pepper. Tasted so sweet and only 54 calories for a one cup serving!
I originally posted this for a 30 day martial arts challenge but it is just as relevant here. Especially for all of us who are *cough* *cough* no longer in our 30s or 40s
Two great days. We've all experienced the first one. How about the second one?
Truth can sometimes be painful...
The last 15 minutes before leaving the office is always the longest hour of the day.
10 Minutes left - make a cup of coffee!
And that's a wrap on Monday at the office. Later, everyone!
On the plus side, there's a full seven days until it's Monday again.
First night back in the dojo after our Summer break. New class of white belts and their parents are watching an intro video.
Now tonight was a good night. If I include my exercise calories, I am running a calorie deficit of 2300 for the day. Time to go home and eat something
True story, yo!
I just found out that one of the math teachers at my son's Jr High starts all his classes with a 5 minute mindfulness meditation. I am so ecstatic that this is happening - it's such an easy way to start dealing with the tragic epidemic of teen depression and suicide.
Although I am disappointed that my son doesn't have this teacher for math!

Happy "Friday Eve" everybody!
I get to work from home this afternoon so I am taking a "late lunch" and going to take the pups for a walk to get a mile or so in.
But first… another cup of life juice
Chicken curry over quinoa for dinner. My wife and son loved it. My daughter? Meh, not so much. Lol
And with that, I’m off to bed.
Happy Friday, everyone!
Or another way to think about it is - the best time to have planted an oak tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.
WOO HOO!!
Drank a cup of coffee... LIKE A VIKING
It's called "Self Care"
Last thought for this wonderful Saturday morning...
Oh yeah, reaching down to pick something up without a care in the world… #goodtimes
My roommate steals food from my plate when he thinks I’m not looking
Good news - my 9 year old daughter has discovered that she likes baking. Bad news - my 9 year old daughter has discovered that she likes baking. But tonight, with minimal assistance from me, she made meringue cookies and, at 25 calories each, one as an after dinner treat isn’t a major hit to my calories count. Oh… AND SHE TOTALLY NAILED THEM
Meal prep - double batch of steel cut oats. I’ll get eight servings, enough for my wife and I to have an easily reheated breakfast for the week. Steel cut oats reheat so well!

Good morning everyone. Have a great week!
One of my all-time favorite quotes.
Follow your dreams. ALWAYS. FOLLOW. YOUR. DREAMS!
Truer words were never said. Thanks, Chewy
It's a fine line...
Just found out my office provides yoga to employees three times a week. Going to start going and add yoga to my weekly exercise!

The struggle is real. Add a couple of kids to the mix and you're left wondering what to fix for three separate meals for the rest of your life! LOL
So this happened last night - my watch was sliding around too much and I thought, out of habit and muscle memory, that I had cinched my strap to the hole I used when I first started this weight loss journey a couple months ago. Nope! I actually needed to move up another spot on the strap!
Yay for coffee

We all have those periods of struggle where we think we aren't progressing. This is for those times when we feel we're up against immovable objects…

Two hours and counting...

Back from the farmers market. Beautiful bounty of beets, zucchini, onions, Brussel sprouts...
Fresh apple cider.
Here’s the end result of the homemade cider. And yes, half an ounce of bourbon made it even better. Only 105 calories total with the bourbon
Cut the brussel sprouts from the farmers market in half and pan roasted them. Amaaaaazing!
Tonight’s bedtime snack - pan roasted brussel sprout and oven roasted beets
After making the compote yesterday, my 9 year old daughter is making the pie this morning. Sure, I’m helping here and there but she is learning some great life skills.
Another sparker’s post about accepting your own weird quirks reminded me that I wanted to post this gem… stay weird, peeps!
Just going to leave this one here
Starting to cook dinner early - but now, these two steaks will feed four people instead of cooking a steak for each person. Now to wait eight hours...
Took one of the pups to a park we’ve never been to before. Not pictured is my son who was “in no mood for pictures l” lolololol
Continuing with the whole “stay weird” vibe, I present this gem:
Nailed my rings today! WOO HOO! (Ignore the mindfulness minutes, my meditation happens after my wife and kids go to bed.)
Good morning, SP peeps!
And a happy-day-after-a-holiday day!
What new experiences are you having?
What new experiences are you having?
I thought seeing slow change on the scale was difficult, I just checked my BMI and I am still four or five months away (at my current weight loss rate which will be tough to sustain) from going from "obese" to merely "overweight". LOL But I am already halfway there from when I started this journey just a few months to go. No worries, I guess that just will become my next goal after I finish this one. So here's a picture of a bunny with a pancake on its head.
Destroying my memories of youth, one meme at a time.
Two and a half hours in the dojo tonight - got some some good cardio in! Came home and made a sandwich… and I’m still at a 1900 calorie deficit for the day.
Second day this week in the dojo and crushed my goals. Now for a bedtime snack of ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, and water.
Truer words...

Starting... NOW!
Doing a sous vide salmon for dinner - along with pan seared brussel sprouts and roasted baby potatoes.
It's true!
WOO HOO! Almost time to go home, make a healthy dinner, and go for a few miles walking.
That moment when you find yourself

I love the movie (The Last Samurai) and this quote is spot on. “To find life in every breath”
Life has meaning and purpose
Good morning everyone! Have an awesome day and enjoy your weekend!!
Remember, it's how you look at things that matter LOL
Sunday night heralds the arrival of Monday morning…
There are many perks but this certainly ranks among the best
This is a saying we use in Karate frequently: "Nana korobi, ya oki" - Fall down seven times, get up eight. Especially applies to my journey of getting back to health!
True story
Cleo (L) and Hemingway (R) wish everyone a great and successful Tuesday. Well, they would if they could talk.
8:45 pm and I’m still 2500 calories below my daily allowance. I guess that explains why I’m hungry.
Good morning Sparkers!!
I tried… I really tried for proper portion control tonight but I had to have the other half of the steak. Good news is that I’m still a couple hundred calories below my daily limit. Plus, nothing unhealthy to eat today (other than the extra steak)
Three mile brisk at lunch and then training in the dojo tonight. Happy results!
Aargh!!!
Can you tell it’s a slow day at the office? Catching up on SparkPeople posting. Lolol
Miyamoto Musashi was a samurai from the 16th century. He wrote a lot of great stuff and this is a translation from part of one of his texts.
I've been frustrated that the scale hasn't moved much recently in spite of me "doing everything right" and then I remembered this little gem about not focusing on how fast or slow something is happening.
This morning’s breakfast - a fresh tomato, some pan roasted Brussel sprouts, and a two egg omelette
How much Omega-3 is in Swedish Fish?

We took the dogs out for a nice long family walk (and doggo training session)

Ruin a movie title by adding a word. I'll start:
Jurassic Parking Lot

Spent two hours in the dojo tonight. Only thing feeling better than sweating is coming home and changing into dry clothes.
My daughter’s school has a “Bike or Walk to School Day” each year and it was yesterday. Since we live about two miles from school, she normally takes the bus. Yesterday we drove about half way and joined her classmates to walk the rest of the way. And then I had to walk back to the car. What a fantastic idea! She has a great school
Hemingway (or as I prefer “Dopey McStupid) looking far more regal than he really is. Lol. He’s an amazing pup and loves looking walks.
Coffee break at work and, by “coffee break” I mean “take a break from drinking coffee for a couple minutes”. And is that SparkPeople in the background??? 😎
True story
Today marks the three year "adopt-iversary" of bringing Hemingway home from the rescue agency. He immediately made himself at home (like he was just waiting for us to come get him) and he hasn't changed since.
Ever had a day where you think you're not making progress? Remember to measure the journey, not the moment.
Dinner yesterday - pork chop (half of one), roasted brussel sprouts and carrots- 290 calories
Remember, planning ahead is important!
Good eating choices today! End of the day and I’m happily staring a 1000 calorie deficit in the face.
After three miles of walking, Hemingway is done for the day
Among other things, I appreciate good poetry.
Strongly recommend keeping one of these grip strengtheners nearby. I’ve got one in the car and at my desk. So when i get bored, I can get some exercise in. Great for when you’re frustrated because you’re stuck in traffic!
Last night’s torture instruments. Oops, I mean strength training apparatus. LOL. Resistance bands, wrist roller, kettlebells, and something we use in martial arts, called a tetsutaba (iron bundle) that’s used for bone strengthening. Resistance bands are great because I can take them when traveling.
Why yes, tacos are a part of my fitness plan. Dedicated to all my Taco Tuesday peeps. You know who you are!!
Friends and family can’t understand your new obsession with getting healthy and the new life choices you’re making? That’s okay, they don’t need to.
Just a little chuckle...
Have a BOO-tiful day!
Have a BOO-tiful day!
My kids don’t have school today so my daughter has a friend over. For lunch they wanted quesadillas. I took a vacation day to hang with them so I’m starting with homemade tortillas (so I can control the ingredients)
Last night in the dojo, a few of my lower rank young students tested for their next belt. The one student without the blurred face is my daughter. She will be testing for her junior black belt in the Spring and was helping me with the testing.
Hippo be hungry!
Good night, my friends. May you have a good and restorative sleep, waking up to a wonderful day.
Asking for a friend
Spent the day yesterday at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.
It was really well done but I have one question - considering how he died, why does it have so many theaters?
Not a great pic (and I freaking hate taking selfies) but I hit the fitness center in the hotel this past weekend. Doing some grip training and lunges with 15 lb dumbbells
Have a great day, SP peeps, and make it yours!
So far I’ve been good! So Santa better notice!!
MMmmm tacos AND poetry
Mmmmm... tacos AND poetry (part 2)

Based on a recommendation from @STILLSPARKLEIGH - I checked out the YouTube channel Yoga with Adriene.
This is a great little 6 minute routine for those of us stuck in a cubicle.
The struggle is real. I can spend a little more time in bed or I can get up and have my first cup of hot bean water (which just doesn’t sound as appealing as “coffee”).

All the talk lately about tacos… so I made Baja shrimp tacos for dinner. About 100 calories per taco, including the sauce. Calling @stillsparkleigh

Happy Wednesday!
Happy Halloween, Spark Peeps!
Horrible news out of Europe!
Well, what they used to see.
Happy Friday, Spark fam! Did you over-indulge on candy yesterday? Worried about the upcoming food-based holidays? I know I am. Fighting off the urge to eat emotionally or when I’m bored is one of my greatest demons.
Why??? SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THIS IS TRUE!!!
Go ahead - I TRIPLE DOG DARE YA
Greetings from the future!
Time for another cup of coffee
Needed vegetable broth today, so I went to the store. The sodium levels are off the chart, so I bought a bunch of veggies instead and am making my own.
And made 25 pounds of fresh dog food. Why should the people only be the ones who eat properly?
Follow up. Made 25 two-cup containers of dog food. Plus leftovers for tonight and tomorrow morning. 20 pounds of cooked chicken, 2 pounds each of carrots, spinach, & cooked rice, and 16 eggs. Two weeks worth of food for two mid size dogs.
And so comes to an end another Monday. Good night, pleasant dreams…
Good morning, Spark fam! I hope everyone has an amazing day!
Good day today. Proper eating and 3.5 hours of exercise equals a 2550 calorie deficit for the day. But I missed TT, sorry @stillsparkleigh - I’ll have to eat them tomorrow #bedtime
Hee hee hee. I would *never* do this
Laying in bed, wondering if tacos are thinking of me, too.
How tragic! Lol. @stillsparkleigh - careful making MBW! Can’t lose you! 🤣🤣🤣
Happy Monday, everyone.

Soup weather is here and my favorite is ramen. Doing a sous vide rolled Chashu (pork belly) overnight. Best way to control the ingredients is to make it yourself! Thin sliced pork belly in ramen is heavenly!

First time doing before and after. Wow. That’s about a 45 pound difference. I can’t stress enough just how much I appreciate and hold dear my SP family. A heartfelt thank you for the support and friendship #BeforeAndAfter

Hey @stillsparkleigh - an homage to your Dr Seuss post the other day. I get extra points for being doggo-focused, right?
Happy Monday, my SP family!

Monday’s first cuppa MBW is in my hand and the day is already looking better! You have yours yet @stillsparkleigh ?
This is what makes life fun!
To sleep, per chance to dream… OF TACO TUESDAY
Are you ready @pelesjewel and @stillsparkleigh ?
Dark cat is watching
UPDATE - this morning, I have almost full range of motion in my finger and the pain has substantially diminished. WOO HOO.
Now thinking just a bad bruise.
Happy Friday, SP family! Weekends are my challenge - it's easy to snack and not pay attention to what I am eating. So I post this as a reminder to myself of the choices I make and continue to make.
Happy Friday, SP family!
Weekends are my challenging time - where I can easily lose track of what I am eating (and why).
So I post this as a reminder to myself about the choices I make and continue to make, with the idea that constant reminding will help me stay focused.
But first, gotta start the work day with coffee and SparkPeople. @stillsparkleigh , I assume you’re enjoying some MBW as well? And notice my kicks match my coffee cup - yeah, that was totally intended. 😉
Poor cow. Probably just needs some coffee.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Stay safe, stay well, stay you!
Is the cooking time protracted?
NSV - even with a glass of wine, I kept my calorie count around 600 for dinner! Passed on the dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, and Jell-o (you know, all the really tasty stuff). I’m about 750 calories below my allotment for the day.
The struggle is real. 🤣 Happy Friday, SP fam!
I'm half Irish...
WHY HAS THIS NEVER OCCURRED TO ME???
After my (attempted) walk, doing some yoga for stretching.
Yoga by Adrienne - with a shout out to @STILLSPARKLEIGH for introducing me to the channel
Everyone, repeat after me: “when one door closes… “
Made it home about 12:30 this morning. That was one looooooong drive. But I managed to shed a pound and a half while on Thanksgiving vacation! And back to my usual SparkPeople antics! #done #home
This is really freaky!
So sad. So very, very sad. Because I’m still sleep deprived from yesterday’s journey, I forgot to being my coffee mug to work. First day back after a week long vacation? Check. Monday? Check. Really sleepy? Check. 😢😢😢
To ease the concerns about my well-being (and the well-being of those around me) I ran a lunch time errand to get some coffee. All is well again. @stillsparkleigh #mbw #elixeroflife

I deserve a short break - got the mushroom jus made last night, the roast for tonight has been cooking since 8 this morning, I’ve prepped the casserole, deviled eggs, and jello salad for tomorrow. I got a Fitbit for Christmas to replace my (soon to be) outdated Apple Watch. It’s taken a little bit of getting used to the different interface but I find myself liking it more than the Apple Watch. How many of you are active on Fitbit.com? I’d like to start adding friends there and it would be awesome to find some from here.
SELFIES FOR SELF ESTEEM Okay @stillsparkleigh I’m in! My daughter and I are making cupcakes for tonight. I’ll have a bite but it’s killing me because they’re awesome and I want to eat several!

In my karate school, I can track my lineage back 200 years. My favorite composer is Palestrina - a man who died over 400 years ago but whose name is still said today.

It took me until the age of 50 before I started undoing all the unhealthy consequences of my previous 20 years. If you’re still breathing, it’s not too late. New career? Better health? New sport or hobby? Get (re)married? Make new friends?
Still breathing? Then you can still do it!
Work colleagues: Hey Rob, how are you doing today?
Me:
That’s how it works, right?
Count your blessings, I guess? 🤔🥴🤢
With my cats, this would only happen in the middle of the night...
I’m a hashafashasfaas kinda guy myself.
Because modern problems require modern solutions. #PSA
Sofa there’s been no ill effects, so that helped to cushion it.
Someone got called a birdbrain.
Oh, the horror of it all!
NSV - moved belt to the next hole as I hit 235 for the first time in 25 years!
Have a wonderful week, everyone
Using the slosh pipe in the dojo tonight.
Sorry, not sorry
Breathe in and #ResetTheTimer
Can’t wait for Day 2
And I, for one, am intrigued. #TrueColors
Walk… Listen… Rejuvenate. #magic

But did it go off without a hitch?
My daughter and I are making more cupcakes. She’s wanting to go extreme today - Strawberry shortcake cupcakes with a lemon curd center, strawberry buttercream, and fresh strawberries. Finished pics to follow #prouddad
And the finished product! Of course she gets into baking as I am getting healthy. Lol
After a minor procedure on my foot last week and crappy weather outside, I’m back to being able to get above 10k steps! Woo hoo!!
But the real question is, which one started looking like the other?
So funny I can “bear”-ly stand it.
After spending much of the past week and a half in front of a computer during the day, I needed to go for a decent walk this afternoon. Not a bad pace: 17 minute miles. I should be hitting 15 minute miles soon. @kennybarbie12 - here’s your post!
Happy Friday, peeps!!

And there’s still so much stupid stuff to do!
Good day today. Not sure I actually climbed that many stairs though. 🤔
Good morning Spark Fam! However and wherever you find tranquility in your lives, I hope there is an abundance of it.
Mmmmmmice…
Cleo Bunny and Hemingway Rabbit wish all@of you a Happy Easter
Good day today and I still likely get an additional 1000 steps in by the time I go to bed #crushedit

Time to turn a new page in my life
Now for something more serious… whatever journey you’re on, may you find tranquillity and sanctuary
Good morning
Hi peeps!
It’s a dog’s life
65 pounds later! #BeforeAndAfter
Good night, Spark fam…
Good day today
Spring is here and trails are opening up again. So happy to get outside...
Experience: the best, and worst, teacher there is.
Hit ‘em all today.
Nighttime walks are among my favorites

Just hit the 75 lb mark this week!! And after four months away, back to regular classes but I’m outside (to help with preventing the spread). Post class selfie (and after 2 hours of training and with no one else nearby, I took my mask off for the pic)
Stay weird, my friends
Drove to Wisconsin today to go hiking. I’ll pass the 20k steps and 10 mile markers this evening but I’ve never hit 100 flights of stairs in a day before.
Hey fam… I’ve been really quiet here lately, just trying to keep my head above water while the kids do remote learning and my wife and I working from home. Missed you all, but I’m back! Heading out in the morning for a hike, preparing for a solo backpack trip next Summer
Found an idyllic spot for a snack break on today’s hike
Heading out for another hike tomorrow morning. Of course it’s supposed to rain
I forgot to put my Fitbit on this morning after charging it overnight so the stairs and active minutes weren’t recorded. BUT WOAH!! Finally hit 30k steps. Hike was amazing, about 11.5 miles, 759’ elevation.
85 Pounds (actually, 86, but I'll round down) - The before picture was how I looked back in July of '19 and the after picture is from about a month ago
