Biking is not just exercise...

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

... I had forgotten that. When I was younger, biking was an escape for me, a way to get some time on my own, time to explore and have some peace and quiet, an easy way to visit my dad after my parents divorced. Riding my bike was freedom, something I craved from an early age.

Yesterday I took off on a trek and ended up riding 6 miles. Who knew I could bike for 6 miles?! I pedaled up big hills, coasted down big hills, smelled spring and all the flowers and trees in bloom. The air was cool and felt so great on my face. I felt so happy and free.

I'm learning, perhaps later than some, earlier than others, that happiness is not something that comes from outside of you, it's not something that others bring to you, and it sure as hell isn't something you purchase. Happiness comes from within you. It's there in all of us if we are quiet and listen for it. If we are open to it, present in the moment, happiness is there and has been there all along, just waiting for us to stop and listen.

I love biking too! It's so nice to get on my bike and go places! I bike-commute (yay, saving $50/month on T pass) and use my bike instead of a car because I don't have a car.

Last year I was doing long rides out to the farm in Waltham, and plan on doing it again this year! (25 mile round trip) I love my cycling pants, they make everything better!

Like you noted, it's such a challenge not to be consumed by everything going on in our lives and take time out to really enjoy life.

This is what my best friend from France taught me. She taught me how to live! Not by spending money but by spending time...with each other, perhaps out in nature maybe enjoying a picnic under the sun.

They know how to take time to enjoy life. We really are always in such a big hurry to rush through everything. We rarely slow down enough to watch the clouds move across the sky, which can actually be quite relaxing and a nice 'rest stop' in the rat race.

The actual point for them much of the time seems to be to stop and smell the roses. That is the actual goal! What a concept.

I just got a Beach Cruiser bike and just love "cruising" it through the neighborhood, although there's not a beach around for hundreds of miles.

It's so true what you said about the sense of freedom and FUN that we forgot to have somewhere along the way of becoming adults! Just because we're older and responsible doesn't mean we can't really have a good time!
