I was just strolling along with Rocky, my golden retriever, and we walked to the school yard near my home, to play around & of course so I can get some exercising accomplished.
When a woman came up to me, who was a distance from me & said , I see you telling your dog what to do & he does everything you tell him.
How did you teach him to obey you the way he does. She said my dog does not listen to me at all. I told her I spent many hours with him since he was 5 months old. He now is 3 yrs. old.
I told her it's like teaching a child, you keep repeating yourself & do one thing at a time over & over. As soon as I saw he knew what I taught him, I moved on to something else.
Before my DH & I got my dog, (we were waiting for his mother to give birth) I went to the library, & got books out & I signed up 0n-line to "Dog Whisper", the TV dog trainer, & got info on how to teach your dog. Then when he was born, I got him at 5 months old when the Mother dog weaned him & the rest is history.
I'm not bragging here, but I must say, he's very intelligent. When I tell him things or ask him something, you can see he's thinking about what I just said. He's amazing for a pet.
I have trained two of my neighbors dogs & taught the dogs a couple of things. The whole thing is, you have to be consistent & patient with them. I tell you they are just like children.
Parents spend time with the children, why not the same with a animal.
Believe me, spend time & you get results.
This is Bruno, I trained him to listen better & taught him to retrieve.
This dog is very high strung, but I managed to teach him to obey his owner. She can't thank me enough. I enjoyed every minute of it.
