appetite vs. hunger

So on Sunday, as I'm rummaging through the house looking for something to eat, my 20 year-old son came in and asked me what I was doing. We started talking about my weight-loss journey, and he said, "Mom, you just had lunch. You can't be hungry. You must be trying to satisfy your appetite, not your hunger." I asked him what he meant, and this is what he said.
He said "when you're trying to satisify your appetite, you are trying to fill a void or a need. When you're trying to satisfy hunger, you trying to satisfy a physiological need that it's time to eat. Like when you get shaky if it's been too long since you last ate."
How did he get so wise?
