Trying Xylitol and a Digital Scale

When I dieted in the past, I really wasn't serious about it in the least. I kind of tried cutting out calories, but it was more of an eyeballing sort of thing, rather than actually keeping track of my intake and then really cutting out calories.
This time I'm determined! I went out and got a digital kitches scale this weekend, and DH and I are totally in love with it. It's just the coolest thing! He's a total gadget lover, though, so it amuses him more than anything. But for me, it's already helped me out. I'm so happy to have it!
Another fun new thing I got this weekend is a package of xylitol. I wanted a sugar substitute, but I hear only bad things about aspartame, sorbitol, splenda, and the other kinds of artificial sweeteners. I've had Stevia in the past, and although I think it's cool that it's made from the leaf of a plant and it's 0 calories, I don't really like the taste of it. And the science is still out on how safe it is.
Xylitol, on the other hand, has not only been shown to be safe to use, it actually promotes healthy teeth because it kills bacteria in your mouth. Plus, it tastes just like sugar! Well, almost. It has kind of a cool feeling on your tongue, but it's not unpleasant. Also, like sorbitol, if you eat enough of it, it can give you diarrhea. I don't plan on replacing all of my sugar intake, though. Just in things like tea, on fruit, and so forth. It's only 10 calories for a teaspoon!
