Food Blog #7 Words Have Power

I got a very good reminder today, from Ruben (FLEXCHEF) that words have power. Of course I believe words have power. I use my words to motivate, encourage and inspire others to want the very best for themselves. But, I am sometimes irresponsible in my use of words about myself. I referred to myself as being weak and heavy because I couldn't do a pull up. Ruben reminded me that there are many men who cannot do a pull up. That doesn't mean I am weak, it just means I can't do a pull up, yet. I am working on it. I am strong in other ways and I will be able to do one pull up by the end of summer.

I always want to challenge myself to do something that is hard. It makes me have to work for it. In the struggle of working towards something I learn more about myself and my character. Here are a few things that I never thought I would be able to do, but can now do:

1. I ran a half marathon! 13.1 miles is a long distance! But, I trained for it and completed something that most people consider hard.

2. I can now do walking lunges with perfect form. No step in between. Back knee comes all the way down to the floor. Abs tight. AND, now I do them with a broom handle held overhead, soon to be replaces with a body bar and then a barbell. Progress! I could barely do a single lunge in September, now I do a perfect walk through.

3. I can do perfect bicep curls using 30# weights. Abs tight, no leaning or swaying.

4. I LOVE doing High Intensity Interval Training. Love it!

And, I make some awesome food!!!! Let's talk food!

Low Carb Day:


4 egg whites + 1 whole egg + brown rice + spinach + soy sausage = YUM! I usually would have the eggs in a whole wheat pita, but I wanted to trim out my processed foods today.

Midmorning Snack

Chocolate Protein Shake + Colombian Coffee = Great start to the day!

Fage 0% Yogurt


Grilled Chicken, avocado, cilantro, cabbage, lime, salsa, red onion

Afternoon Snack

Chocolate Protein Shake


Tilapia, sweet potato, and broccoli

Night time snack is a chocolate shake.

Tonight was bikini picture night. The pictures do not reflect the amount of changes I feel in my body. I am getting narrower across my back and across my hips. My muffin top right above my bikini line is getting smaller. Since I promised to let you follow along with my weekly progress, I will sign off with a couple pictures. Practicing what I preach about focusing on your assets and remembering that words have power. I notice that my collar bone area is becoming more prominent, my shoulder and upper chest area is feeling and looking a lot slimmer. When I first started this journey, it was to lose weight and feel healthy. I have accomplished that. I am now in the process of reclaiming as much of my figure as possible. I am amazed how my body has responded to the healthy foods and exercise I do. Can I reverse stretch marks and sagging? I cannot. Does that mean I have to settle for less than the best I can achieve at this point? No, it does not.

Bodies come in different shapes and sizes, this is mine. I'm taking the best care of it I can. Take care of yours. Say something nice about yourself.

    Oh my goodness. Your abs look AWESOME! Plus everytime I see the pics of your breakfasts it makes me hungry :). I'm (slowly) learning to talk nicer to and about myself. You always consider how what you're saying affects other people but not really about how it affects you. I'm trying to not be so hard on myself and to treat myself the way I'd treat one of my friends. This blog was a good reminder of that. You've come a long way baby and you'll be doing those pull ups (unassisted) long before summer is over, I have faith in that!!!

    I love your pictures! Your abs are very shapely and you can tell a lot when you compare the 3 wks difference. You encourage me! Someday, I will post a bikini picture too. Not today and not this month but someday.

    I try to talk positive to and about myself but sometimes it's very hard. My positive mantra lately has been that I'm getting healthy and strong. I'm working on it!

    If nothing else I have discovered while here on SP, it's the journey that counts, not the destination. John Bingham's words have become so true to me, "The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start." While we haven't been sparkfriends for too long, to me, you embody this philosophy. You are courageous and don't let the small things set you back.

    You seem to have a good attitude toward the program and are working really hard--wow--a half-marathon! I can't imagine doing that yet! And I don't think I could even lift 30# weights, let alone do anything with them!
