Enjoying smoothies and losing pounds:)

Thursday, June 24, 2010

This month I have been drinking smoothies that I make myself. It has been helping me a lot. 1) It saves me eating lots of calories 2) It takes away my craving for sweets 3) It gets me fruits servings in for the day 4) It helps me feel cool on these very hot days. I am sure I can come up with a couple more but these are my biggest reasons for drinking healthy smoothies:)

I usually have one for breakfast or lunch and sometimes for a snack. I use whatever yogurt and fruit I have on hand. They are so delicious they come out like a nice thick milkshake...yummy!

To make a nice glass full I use 4 ice cubes, 1/2 cup of skim milk, 1 single serving container of lite yogurt(which I freeze because it makes the smoothie thicker), and some fresh or frozen fruit(the amount depends on the fruit and how much I feel like eating but usually a 1/2 banana and a piece of fruit or a few berries). And depending on the flavor I will add a dash of cinnamon and/or vanilla and honey or splenda if I want it a little sweeter;) Oh, and adding a little lemon, lime, or orange zest gives it an extra refreshing kick. Blend it all together until nice and smooth...and yum, enjoy!

This is my version of a smoothie. I like using frozen fruit because it makes it thicker and you can cut back on the ice for a stronger fruit flavor but smaller serving. I throw my fresh fruit in the freezer before they go bad and now I never have to throw it in the trash! I know there are endless possibilities and recipes but I just thought I would share what I do for anyone that may be curious. Also adding 1/2-1 tsp. of ground flaxseed gives a boost of fiber.

If anyone has a good smoothie or drink recipe let me know. I'd be interested in trying it:) Blessings!

Sounds good. I love a good Strawberry Banana smoothie best. My friend, Modesta, has a good smoothie recipe. I believe it is up on her page favorites.

I've just gotten interested in smoothies, having had an awesome one on my latest vacation. Unfortunately, I can't find my blender, but I'm promising myself that if I can't find it in the next week or two I can buy a new one.

I don't know the proportions, but the ingredients of the smoothie that was so good are: pineapple, banana, mango, tropical and orange juices, and orange sherbet. I think it was about 210 calories for the size I got, which was perhaps 12 or 14 ounces (I'm guessing).

I always have a problem with the ice cubes as well. Maybe I should try a Ninja blender. Glad to hear it works for others. Thanks, Hope. Glad you shared this tip.

Love smoothies and have one every morning. I use frozen blueberries and strawberries usually but sometimes I add peach slices (if I have a can open), with soy milk usually. I can't eat yogurt or milk anymore, but I used to love to add yogurt as well. Yummy!

Sounds great. Everyone here is a resource of information on smooties. It sounds like i need to start with a ninja blender. Which I have been wanting to do. I shop at Costco - so will look for their protein powder as well.

Sounds really yummy. If you get some really good protein powder you could add 20 gr's of protein to each smoothie.. I use a medical quality called Ujury. Have to order on line. Recommended by my dietation. Costco has a good one too.
I use them at least 4 times a week. Probably now that's it summer will become my breakfast. Just change the fruit. You
can also add some peanut butter . So many ideas. emoticon emoticon emoticon

tonight I threw some frozen strawberries in my ninja blender with some ice cubes and about an ounce of ocean spray blueberry juice drink. blended it together and made a nice thick smoothie!

I bought my ninja blender partly because of how it chops through ice and it's great with frozen fruit.

Great blog! keep up the good job!

Yummy I love smoothies as well. I use frozen blueberries and frozen strawberries as well. They are refreshing and filling. I have a really cheap blender so ice cubes would wreck mine.
