Trail Ridge Road and Grand Lake
Thursday, July 15, 2010
We took Trail Ridge Road over the Rocky Mountains to Grand Lake. I was glad I wasn't driving. It was foggy and rainy and we even got into some snow showers. On top of that, there was road construction.
It was interesting seeing the edge of the tree line and the tundra above it.

We stopped at the Holzwarth Historic Site in the park. If you ever have a chance to go I would recommend it. It was a very interesting story and a beautiful setting in the valley surrounded by the mountains. The Colorado River runs through it. Here is Jake, Jessi and Jeff. The start of the river is about 10 miles away.
The place operated as a dude ranch until the 1970's. Here is Jessi, Jake and Jeff at one of the cabins.
We stayed in a condo in Grand Lake. Jeff said it was more to his liking than the cabin. I liked both of them. This picture is looking from the back of the condo.
This gorgeous picture is of Shadow Mountain Lake which is right next to Grand Lake.
We did some shopping in Grand Lake. The main street kind of reminded me of an old west town with it's wooden boardwalk. I found one great store called Cabin Fever that I spent some time (and money) in. It was a fun store! They also have several ice cream parlors with homemade ice cream. Yum Yum.
Even though it rained most of the day and we didn't get to do everything we wanted to, we still had a good time. We didn't get to see all the sites from Trail Ridge Road and we didn't get to hike to the beginning of the Colorado River like I wanted. It did stop raining while we visited the historic site and while we did some shopping.
Jeff had planned to come home the same way we came but after driving in dense fog at the top of the mountains, he changed his mind. We ended up going to Denver and then home.
Thanks for stopping by. Terry
