I'm on "rest duty," having been put there by my husband. He made me swear not to walk outside or to do any exercises for the next few days because I've been having some pain in my new hip joint. He wants to see, (rightly so) if it diminishes or goes away with rest. It's true that I HAVE really been pushing it hard. I only had the hip replacement less than two months ago, and already I've been running and walking 19 minute miles (up some very steep hills).

I've never been one to let pain stand in the way of my doing something I want to do...and so on days when I'm hurting I just push through it. However, the pain has become more persistent and bothersome in my hip, so I do think it's time to look into what is causing it. Is it overuse? Or is the infection I have beginning to invade the prosthesis? Or is it something else entirely? Because obviously, I am voting for "choice #1" I think I'd better take his advice before what may only be a strain issue, becomes something more major.

This, of course, is very frustrating because I was just beginning to see some changes in my level of endurance and also some good changes in my body as a result of the work outs I've been doing. I need to think carefully now, how I can hold on to those advantages, maybe not make new progress, but at least not to lose the progress I've already made. I've been trying to be a little more active just in terms of maintaining my house and today I have an opportunity to go swimming. Believe me, my plan is to exercise as much as possible while in the water, because that will not hurt my joints nearly as much as running or walking or even yoga.

I'd love to hear any other ideas you guys might have regarding how I might maintain muscle tone and burn fat while on "layaway"...please feel free to share them.

    Aberlaine, y0u are right about the chair exercises. I've been doing chair yoga which I've been loving. I have to be careful even with that though because they want me to twist my legs into positions that I shouldn't do, just having had this surgery. I use my discretion with it and do what I can. It's a great idea; exercising while sitting down. There are so many people who can't do it standing up! emoticon

    First of all, pain is our body's way of saying, hold it, you're doing too much. So your husband's idea is a good one.

    Second, when my knee was bothering me last year because of a fall on the ice, I started doing chair exercises. Just search for them. There are many out there. Then you can keep your arms and legs in shape but not do any weight-bearing exercises.

    those are great ideas. I don't have the money to join a gym, nor do I have a stationary bike or even a regular bike, but they would be good goals to save up for.

    I do have some dumbbells and a pulley system over the door to the room where I work out, which is good for upper body strength. I also have a stability ball that I've been using, so if I'm creative I can probably keep up the muscle strength...the cardio, however, is harder to come by if you can't walk or run. I wonder how much "arm bikes" like INDYGIRL has would cost?

    A friend of mine here at work had a hip replacement and not to stress it out but still get her exercise she rides a stationary bike and does some lifting with machines and free weights.

    Sounds like you may be trying to push your self too hard too soon. Hubby is right Rest.. Rest .. Rest...

    Remember the tortes and the hare? Slow and steady wins the race.

    You can do this just be patient with your body, when it hurts slow it down a bit. Try the bike riding - I love my stationary bike and try trail biking or even just road biking for outdoor stuff. All are great and not so tough on the hips, knees or ankles! They still can work the upper body and abs especially on hills!
