The Forgotten Food

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Here's another "qu0te" from a message board item I posted on the topic, "How do you break your bad habits?"
Thought maybe it would help some of you midnight rummagers!

My current worst habit is that I eat when I get up in the middle of the night. Because I have chronic pain, I get up at least 3 or 4 times a night and have to walk around...Soooo, where do I walk? To the refrigerator of course!

Two things that have helped me immensely to keep from totally stuffing my face and ruining all the good work of the day before are these:

1) Don't buy it or bake it! You can't eat it if it ain't there!

2) If you HAVE to have something baked in the house, for example, stick it in the freezer. it's less visible and you're less likely to bite into it in the middle of the night.

3) I buy a special snack item (like fat free/sugar free pudding or rice pudding or tapioca) and keep it in the fridge. I'm "allowed" to have one of those a night. And I make sure I have the room on my calorie range the day before (which also keeps me from overeating then). If I MUST have another snack, I'll have a piece of fruit.

Compared to the stacks of cookies and sweets I used to gobble while half-conscious, I'm doing well now, by using these methods.

My problem is not getting the stuff into the house in the first place. I just can't seem to get passed the cookie or ice cream aisle without buying something. I know I must shop when my stomach is full, but sometimes I forget.

I must remember to eat well before grocery shopping!

Of course you are doing better. I totally agree with out of sight out of mind. I make my kitchen off limits after 9:00 pm.
I fill up my water bottle, have it by the bed. If I wake up I drink water. I sometimes have to go to the loo, but then it's right back into bed. I find sometimes my water is almost gone in the morning. So I must wake up and drink it and not even realize I woke up.
I hope you continue to keep your night time snack attacks in check.
