August 26th is womens equality day!
Wednesday, August 18, 2010
August 26 of each year is designated in the United States as Women's Equality Day. Instituted by Rep. Bella Abzug and first established in 1971, the date commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights in 1920. I plan to attend a local dinner with my daughter put on by our chapter of the National Organization of Women. I want to share with my daughter the celebration fo womens empowerment. With other people who value the efforts made to allow women to have a voice and make a difference in our community and nation. We as a people need to recognize that women are still being treated in a less then equal fashion. We need to stop being complacent and make all efforts to create a society that allows women free access to work, education and the nurturing of their families. By supporting women and girls we are supporting our families and changing our society for the better.
