Goal Setting, schmoal setting!

Let's face it: I'm not the greatest at setting a goal and following through with it. I need to figure out why that is and change it; because obviously, the key to accomplishing ANYTHING in life is setting and accomplishing goals.

Firstly, I need to ask, "WHY am I so bad at following through??"
I think the answer to that is complex. For one thing, I tend to get too excited and too ambitious and set 25 goals at one time, rather than keeping it simple by setting only one. For that reason, I tend to forget what the goals WERE, and they rapidly fade into distant memory, with me being lucky if I followed through for a single day.

Secondly:
My memory is so bad that it is almost guaranteed that by the next day, I will have forgotten that I even SET any goals. I need some way of reminding myself...daily, about my goal (s).

Thirdly:
I am terrible about rewarding myself for goals that I've and accomplished. This is largely due to finances. It's easy to say, "I will treat myself to such-and-such"---but when the time comes and the wallet is empty, I often have to say,"Oh well, it was a good idea, anyway." and go without it. So somehow I need to come up with rewards that are inexpensive or free (things that I stil really WANT)...and then follow through with giving them to myself.

Fourthly:
I have no real accountability. I need someone to harrass me and daily remind me and ask me, "how are you doing with that?" and right now, there is no one in my life that can/would do that for me.

Solutions?
Obviously, for the first problem: SET ONLY ONE GOAL AT A TIME!! Have that goal well established before continuing on to the next!

For the second:
Post the goal in a place where I will definitely see it every day!! In big colorful letters!

Third:
This will take some thought, but I need to think of something that will be rewarding ...and FREE! Maybe going on a day trip to a local waterfall or local tourist spot in town that I haven't been to. Or out for coffee with a friend. Since I can't drive right now, I need to find a "goal-buddy"...Someone to help me accomplish these goals.

Fourth:
I need to find a Spark Buddy. I had one and she was great; really helping me. But somehow, she fell off of the ends of the earth and hasn't been on Spark for a long time. Need to find someone else. Preferably someone who's been around and accomplished a lot, especially in the way of fitness...to movtivate me and keep me accountable.

So, what will my ONE goal be for this week?
To work out every day...for at least 20 minutes...doing SOMETHING, (even if it's just walking,) to keep my body moving. I've found in this past week that if you slack off JUST A TINY BIT...it's so hard to get going again. I've not exercised in two or three days,...and I've gained five pounds back.
NO WAY ...! I will NOT let this happen! Back to the mat!

    I am not good with goals because I need a non-structured approach to this journey with very simple goals so I can surpass them. Once I realized this - lots of things got a lot easier.

    You are doing a great job of being self-aware. That is amazing. Congrats and keep on rocking this.

    I know exactly where you are coming from. I am the same way. I set goals and then within a week I am back to my old habits and have given up on the goal. I never have set a reward for my goal, I'm not sure why. I definitely understand the finances, I am on disability and money is tight, the bad economy does not help. I am the worst when it comes to exercise. I have had foot surgery on the bottom of both my feet and my tread mill is off limits for now. I play the wii to get some movement, and do what I can on the housework but with very little energy it's hard to do a lot at one time, but overall honestly I can be just plain lazy. So, let's check on each other this week. I will add you as a friend, feel free to add me if you would like. I will set some goals on my spark page and let's try to make our goals habits, one week at a time. Good luck to you!!!!!

    Good for you! You have figured YOU out. That's an incredible start. Instead of having ONE buddy, go for many!! There are many out here that will check in on you, if you disappear for a day or two. emoticon Great goal for this week! As for rewards, as time goes on, and not exactly free, got to a resale shop or a rummage sale and pick up a "new" piece of clothing in your goal size or at least a smaller size. That will cost 50 cents to a $1, and you will have a nice reward. I have been doing that and am already wearing some of my inexpensive items. Best of luck to you on your journey! You CAN do this!!

    What a great blog! You have hit the nail on the head for so many people, I'm sure!

    Figuring out what the isssue is ... that's half the battle... sounds like you are well on the way to getting over this particular hurdle!
