What a Shocker

Friday, November 05, 2010

Time for my second blog.

On my wife’s birthday, September 6, I stepped on the scale for the first time in over a year. Yikes, 218. I was shocked. I was depressed.

These feelings were a good thing. I repeat. They were a good thing. If the scale had told me 191 like they did this morning, the disgust I felt wouldn’t have carried the punch of 218 - a punch that was a call to action.

Immediately, I took out the dumbbells and dusted off our spin cycle. Since then, I’ve been very stringent in my regimen. Exercise daily. Eat healthier. Be more active in general.

Then, I found Spark. Here’s how this site does it for me. On almost my first day, I received a PM from Rhonda asking if I’d be interested in joining a Spark team (the Walktober Sparks) that tried to get out there walking. I was hesitant, thinking that I already had my exercise routine down, but decided I might as well. This is a small group that I’d recommend to anyone. I got to know specific members and, before I knew it, had a network of appreciated Spark buddies.

I also got into Spark challenges: Lose 10 pounds in October, Lose 5 pounds in November, Hit 180 by New Years, and the 28 Day Bootcamp. These smaller, intermediate steps on the long trail really help. It makes everything seem more doable.

Sorry for being long-winded. That’s my curse. But, my point is that, if not for the shocker on September 6, I wouldn’t have felt compelled to act. Also, Spark has provided a support network that keeps me accountable for my choices and actions, all the while keeping my knowledge base growing.

I guess the true tests will be if I reach my goal level of fitness as well as, more importantly, how well I sustain these over time.

We’ll see.
