Philippians 2:13 NLT
"For God is working in you to give you the desire and the power to do what pleases him."
It's a short verse. One line.
It had somehow, in the million times I'd read Philippians escaped my notice --maybe because in the good old KJV it is a bit tougher to understand "To will and to work that which is according to his good purpose." I think it says. And somehow that never sunk into my thick head, until I just looked at that chapter tonight in the New Living Translation, and this verse leaped out and hit my like a two by four.
God is giving me the power...not only to WANT to please him and do what's right...He's also giving me the ABILITY to do so.
What pleases God?
Well, right now a verse popped to mind: "And without faith it is impossible to please God." I think that verse is from Hebrews 11 somewhere...(I have to check that). What is faith? The answer to that is in Hebrews 11: 1 also. It is the conviction; the CERTAINTY of the reality of something that we cannot right now see. For example, if you KNOW that inside your 200+ lb body there is a svelte 120 pounder just dying to get out, then you have FAITH in that. And God wants us to have that certainty about His existence...and about the existence of an entire world in an unseen realm...the realm of the spirit. And to have the knowledge that THAT world is really what THIS world is and should be all about.
It pleases God when we do the things he says in the Bible that He wants us to do and to try to become the people He desires for us to be. And one of those things that Scripture tells us about the way we should be living is to "Let your moderation be known to all men." (this is in Philippians 4) (YOU DIDN'T KNOW THE SPARK DIET WAS IN THE BIBLE , DID YOU??? LOL). What exactly is moderation?
the quality of being moderate; restraint; avoidance of extremes or excesses; temperance.
According to Dictionary.com
And we may feel overwhelmed or even condemned by that...but don't. Just make it your business to change things. A little at a time. Say no to that extra here and that excess there....and little by little you WILL be able to attain that life of moderation.
How do I know that?? Look at the verse in Phil. 2 where we started.
God has given you the desire...He will also give you the ability and the strength to carry it out.
Ask him for that. Go to him for help...after all it was HE who made that promise, wasn't it??
