Low sodium beware!

Friday, April 29, 2011

A coworker was admitted to the hospital yesterday for "dangerously low" sodium levels. He had been feeling lethargic, forgetting things, and just not feeling "right". He went for blood work on Wed and was called Thurs morning to be admitted. Turns out his sodium level was only 120 (should be 135-145). He is up to 127 now, and will be released when it gets over 130 (hopefully tomorrow!). Turns out he was not getting enough sodium in his diet, and drinking more than enough water, so he was flushing too much of it out.

Lesson: If you are on a low sodium diet, be sure it is not NO sodium! Dr said it can also cause fainting and seisures!

Wow, I did not know that. My DH is always telling me that my sodium vs water level is out of balance and that's probably why I feel like I do sometimes, and to think I told him he doesn't know what he's talking about. Guess I owe him an apology. I hope your co-worker gets better very soon.

He must eat almost NO processed foods! They are loaded with sodium! Scary!
