Day 131: Another day older...

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

...and probably deeper in debt. Anyone else remember the old Tennessee Ernie Ford song?

I spent a lot of time - TOO much time - on the computer today. I've gotten so wrapped up in the genealogy research. Himself gave me a gift subscription to Ancestry a couple years ago, and I go in fits and starts, times when it's an all-consuming obsession and times when I barely glance at it.

The other day my son asked me if we'd had anyone in the family who'd fought in the Civil War. Yes, is the simple answer. I knew it long before I ever started poking around in the ol' family tree - but I only knew of one soldier. Turns out there are some half-dozen, between my former in-laws ancestors and my family's.

So I've been trying to collect the documentation and sources that verify the information, plus fill in some of the gaps with dates, places, etc. A lot of stuff is available online, including a database that often records where the enlistee was living at the time he joined, who his parents were - including his mother's maiden name - and even his birthdate right down to day, month, year (so many records list just age or year of birth). This is proving to be a real treasure trove of information. A time-consuming trove of information.

Maybe someday I'll have one of those treadmill-computer-desks you hear tell of. It would suit me. Meanwhile, I'm chafing at not getting enough exercise, and when I'm out walking or doing some fitness, I'm chafing at the things I need to be at the computer to do. Never an in-between.

I'm starting to fret about falling behind on the ordinary stuff - housework, Spark, emails, even learning more on my new phone (I am so low-tech; these things never come easily to me).

Eh. It is what it is.

Goodnight, Sparklers, wherever you are!

I spend too much time on the computer some days too...usually doing emails (both personal and work) and doing spark....that consums much of my time...lol....

take another walk...even half an hour and then you would feel better with yourself.....

Tomorrow is another day......you can do it....

Holy Cow! Ive never heard of a Treadmill desk--shows how much I know!--Sounds like a neat thing tho!!!and as for the exercise and the Sparking and finding time for both, its like a balancing act--then theres the cleaning and the bills----and the food--Maybe we should get back to the olden days where life appeared to be more simple!--Anyway Kasey--nice to read yer blog-I always enjoy it!---Lynda emoticon

    Hi Kasey!

You're a good mom for doing the research. I've got an uncle who, in his 90s, has assembled an impressive collection of family research and saved me the trouble. Whew!

Re the tune you mention... check this out. http://dontrushme.wordpress.com/201
I love his basso profundo and the surreal-ness of the performance!

    Gorgeous moon image you posted!

    ciao for now,

If you ever get one of those tread-desks, I will be jealous. However, note you can't walk very fast and still do a decent job of concentrating on desk work! Doesn't matter, though, because the sheer volume of minutes makes up for it.

    Sleep well, Kasey! emoticon

I do the Ancestry.com thing too, and try to keep all our names up to date, who married so-and-so, etc. The Civil War is so incredibly interesting as a whole, let alone having ancestors who fought.

As for a treadmill desk, I made my own, West Virginia-style. I had a heavy board in my garage that was just the right size. I laid it across the arms of my treadmill. It doesn't budge. I have a laptop on it, water bottle, dental floss, wine glass and tissues! On the reading rack of the treadmill I keep a DVD player. So I watch the movie, Spark a little and shop on eBay and Amazon, all while I'm on the treadmill. I can stay a long time, especially if the movie is good. emoticon

I'm glad you're enjoying your research. Perhaps you should live by the adage, "All things in moderation" and it would help you feel more balanced? emoticon
