Carb Cycling - Why I love it

Friday, May 13, 2011

I've been carb cyling for a couple of weeks. I have really started to love it, and feel like this is a plan I can stick to. I've been going three days of low carb followed by one day higher carb. I know there are alot of sites out there that offer advice on this, some cycle with no carbs, etc. This plan has been working for me. Here are the reasons why:

1. I know that if I can stay on track for 3 days, I get a break and can have carbs. It feels like a "cheat day", even though I'm only cheating by eating more fruit!

2. I love the feeling of eating low carb. I do not have carb cravings, and feel totally in control of my eating. I am satisfied longer on high fat-protein foods and make it to the next meal time without craving food, but get truly hungry. Feeling true hunger as compared to fighting cravings is a good feeling.

3. I have lost a lot of bloat. My jeans fit great and I feel very light. Who would have thought that could happen by eating high protein and higher fat foods?

The down side is that it takes a little more prep to have the right foods on hand. It's easier to just grab an apple than to prepare eggs, etc. It's been worth it!

I have noticed that by the 3rd day of low carb, my energy level has decreased and I struggle a little bit with my workouts, but that has been fixing itself, by having that day off and carbing back up a little bit. I have still been able to stay off grains and just increasing my fruit and veggie intake and adding a potato on that day off.

Sounds really good to me and if it works for you then that's wonderful! And nobody can have a go at you because you're not taking anything out of your diet completely. I think i do this sometimes, when i know i've over done it one day i cut back on my carbs for a few days to make me feel less slugglish.

    Great job! =)

Although I don't intend to carb cycle I guess thats kinda what I do. I am a protein type and do way better with high protein high fat foods but same as you I get to feeling quite drained after a couple days so I add a little carbs then but not grains really. The last two days have been quite low carb but I know I have a run to do this morning so I had a banana, sunflower seed butter and flaxseed for brekkie instead of eggs. I think I might do as you do and schedule my higher carb days, I like how it makes it seem like a treat day.
    Doin' great girl!
