No Longer Going to be the Fat Aunt

Monday, June 27, 2011

Howdy everyone! It's been ages since I've blogged so I thought I'd give it a shot and ramble a bit.

I've been sitting here reading other blogs, postings, the such and kind of looking back at my progress, or lack there of and devising a plan that I know I can do and commit to. I'm asking all of you as my Spark Buddies to hold me accountable and feel free to kick my rear when I start to slack. I have no reason not to be healthy - I read the things that people have gone through, personal struggles, illnesses, etc. and I'm in awe at what some people have faced and conquered. Now I need to conquer this battle of the bulge(s)!

I was on vacation a week ago and went down to Kansas to watch my nephew play basketball. He's such a sweet kid, a little onery but he's 17 - what can you expect? But I overheard him talking with a friend as I was coming up behind him. The friend asked him why he was hanging out in the lobby and he said "I'm waiting for my aunt to come". The friend says "Oh the fat one". I was crushed and held my breath as I waited for him to answer. And my nephew looked at him and said "no the fun one and don't call her fat".

He brought tears to my eyes and I realized that he didn't look at the weight, he looked at me as his aunt that loves him and would do anything for him (geesh one weekend I drove 300 miles just to follow him in a round of basketball games).

But the whole ordeal made me think of the fact that he may not see me as "the fat aunt" but others do. And it made me determined to get back on track, to eat better and get to moving. I've been on SparkPeople for over a year and have little to show, except for meeting some great people!

So, my friends, please feel free to push, prod or anything it takes to help keep me on track on this journey!

Thanks for sharing the heartwarming story. It brought a tear to my for a few reasons. I hope you see yourself as your nephew sees you. Let how beautiful you are move you on to take care of yourself and treat yourself to good health and energy. Isn't it wonderful to have those that love us and inspire us to be the best we can. Sorry I tend to get a bit mushy.

    emoticon Debbie,
Children often say the meanest things! I was so proud of your nephew. I think he is just a great guy to see you as you truly are: The one aunt that is "The fun one," was a great answer. emoticon What an emoticon plan. We can do this together! emoticon emoticon

I can certainly empathize with that! I'm going down south to visit my nephews and grand nephews and nieces in October. Some of whom have never met me. I want to be referred to as the "fun Aunt" not the "fat Aunt". That's why the support here is so great. There's always someone who understands exactly what you need.

Am I to assume you're staying with the 17DD? Also, take a look at some of the self help books that were recommended. A diet can be the best diet plan in the world, but unless we address why we got fat in the first place, it won't help us very much.

Sometimes what gets us in gear isn't very fun, but the motivation is quite welcome!

    How's your plan coming along?

Kudos to your family for raising your nephew to love no matter what. I am here for you when you need support and I can help hold you accountable. Set small goals to start and focus on accomplishing those. Once you get them then set a little touger goals. Baby steps. You can do it!

What a wonderful nephew you have there. So nice to hear that he put his friend straight and knows who clearly loves him and would do anything for him! Not all 17 year olds would have done the same thing, regardless of what they know or how they felt.

I can only imagine how painful that would be to hear. I am glad rather than letting it crush you, you have dusted yourself off and have made a plan to tackle the battle of the bulge. YOU CAN DO THIS!! It is your healthy, your body and your mind and if you are ready then they had best watch out because you are going to kick some serious butt!!

Now I would love to help you along the way by holding you accountable...however, you would have to let me know what the plan is you have come up with so that we can do that for you!!

Remember Oz didn't give the tin man anything the tin man didn't already have! There is no magic just determination!

    Good morning Debbie,

What a story, that brought back memories of my Aunt Mary Alice. Mary lived in Detroit MI and came to visit us one time, which was to be her last time I would ever see her again. She too had a weight issue. I was 16 when she came to visit, and she took time to walk to me with to sit in my 55 Chev. She was my aunt who I loved so much, I did not see her weight at all. I did see a beautiful women who resembled my dad and I in so many ways. I had become a christian earlier, and she ask me if I were one. I gladly told her yes...she is still in my heart and mind as if this all happened yesterday. She passed away a few months later at the age of 33. I am now 59, have never forgotten her, and never will.
I love your story, and I also know if I would meet you in person, I too would see the same type of woman my aunt was, is. I hope and pray you will keep going and look to your buddy's here to help pull you up when needed and cheer you on when you hit your goals...one step at a time.
