Dozens of blown-down trees = big raking fitness minutes

Monday, July 04, 2011

A micro-burst blew down 24 trees onto 1/2 mile of our dirt mountain road while we were in the big city. We cut them enough to get the car through & get home to no power for 24 hrs. Then I raked (yep, raked) the road to remove shattered limbs, branches, and ga-jillions of pine cones. Another 20 blew down in the vicinity of the house (no damage -- we have cleared the trees around the house because of severe wildfire danger). We lost some magnificent aspens and a huge fir. Hundreds more fell on the BLM land adjacent to our property and on "my" hiking path....sometimes 3 trees deep. (A huge tree falls down on top of 2-3 other trees and they are stacked on the ground 3-4 deep).

I haven't attempted running a chain saw...because I LIKE my legs ATTACHED to my body. DH has medical "stuff" this week...and it will take a team of men & machines to pull the trees to where they can be delimbed & wenched out. Some are above our heads hanging over the road.

THEN I'll turn on my handy-dandy heart rate monitor & load the cut off limbs onto the forks of the DH-driven tractor to be hauled to the slash piles. When we're finished, I will be allowed to eat any darn thing I want because the calorie burn will be horrendous! Yay! Can't wait! (sorta-kinda...lol) Maybe the bull moose I saw yesterday with lend a hand!

I'm glad your house is alright! We went through a micro-burst several years ago and it devastated our small town, taking down so many trees. I recognize the amount of work you have ahead of you! You're right - that calorie burn is going to hugemongous!
Be careful out there cleaning up!

A micro burst!?!?!? WOW! That sounds like an amazingly powerful and destructive force! I'll have to google it and learn something new today!!! I'm glad that you, DH and Mr. Moose are safe & sound. I'm exhausted for you already ... you will be able to dine on the finest appetizers (chocolate), salads (chocolate), entree (chocolate) and followed by 2 helpings of dessert (chocolate chocolate).

Hmmm ... I think you'd better not hire me on as your chef!

Wow -- who needs a gym when one lives in the mountains! The weather has certainly been wacky this year. Don't overdo but have fun!

How do you do it? You turn every disaster in you life into a positive. Ok, I've heard about finding a silver lining but you take the cake! Honestly, you're attitude towards life is so awesome and inspiring. Nature do your worst because Nancy will triumph in the end! Way to go

My goodness, you sure have had a bad year with the downed trees! First snow, now winds! So sorry! I love trees, but not near my house! When we moved to Florida, with hurricane threats all summer, makes you not want those magnificent 100 year old live oaks next to your house! Plus, you get all the leaves and debris the rest of the year. No, not for me! Been there done that! Don't work too hard! emoticon
    Be careful!

Life is never dull for you is it? I am so glad you have a sense of adventure! Sounds like you will qualify for great eats. That's putting a positive spin on it. Sorry about DH injurys. The guy doesn't get many easy breaks does he? I got lucky with the gravel. I am much more careful now. Sometimes when I am barreling down a steep descent I ponder if I would have time to role out of a crash to save myself or how bad will it hurt, will I have to miss work? Crazy! Well I hope that moose shows up and wants to play mule. Now that would be great!!
