You wanna be a what?

Thursday, September 01, 2011

So I have this twisted fantasy of wanting to be a runner. Why is this twisted? you might be asking...Let me explain, I have always hated running. In high school, I faked sick to miss the "1 mile" day in gym class. In college, I skipped the second day of try- outs because it was the running part of fit test (needless to say I didnt make the team).
Here I am, years later and 50 pounds heavier and I have this RANDOM desire to become a runner. Really?!
I think the quote goes "those who dislike learning, teach" In my case that would be "those who dislike running, run". LMBO
So to fulfill this burning desire I have, I've researched a 5k race that is scheduled Nov. 5, 2011 and I've found a "5 week to 5k" program here on Sparkpeople that I will use to get me ready...
Here I go....:)

We got to do what we dream or otherwise our lives will fly by and we won't get the chance. I know I wish I'd done more of the things I wanted instead of listening to my husband tell me how I couldn't do it.

Good for you!! I never EVER thought I'd be a runner, but here I am - I'm still "wogging" more than jogging (run, walk, run, walk), but I'm increasing the run times and ONE of these days I'll run a full 5K!

Oh I can SOOOO relate to this blog...LOL... I too was the girl who would do anything not to have to run.. !! It is not an action that comes naturally to me... funny how some people look so graceful and athletic while running... I am a beet red, huffing and puffing mess who lands on flat feet...all the while making unnatural sounds.. !!
BUT... I, like you...have developed an odd desire to "become a runner"...and I am about 70 pounds overweight. I have signed on with Sparks C25K training program. Now, keep in mind that I LOVE to walk..and have walked many a 5K... but I always have to look on the event info and make sure it is "walker-friendly"... I just signed up for the FireCracker 5K Run here in Los Angeles.. it's not till February so I figure that will give me plenty of time to get ready...
Good luck to both of us !!

I relate to what you're going through exactly. I never ran growing up. Avoided it at all costs. Joked about how I'd only run under threat of violence or death. And then, suddenly, as an adult, I found myself with this odd urge to pick up my pace during long walks. I ignored it because I thought I was crazy. Finally, I confessed my own twisted fantasy to a good friend, who just looked at me and said, "If you're thinking about running, you're already a runner. Just go."

    So I did.

And now I throw her simple but sage words out to you, and I hope you find them as inspirational as I did.

    Good luck. emoticon
