Good News....and Awaiting Word

Tuesday, October 18, 2011

For about the past week or two I've noticed decided swelling in my legs, finally creeping up to my belly, face, and down to my fingers....by Saturday I looked like the Michelin Man's twin sister! the Doctor had begun with 40 mg of Lasix a day and ended up with 160 mg /day. To no effect. I continue to swell. After I called him on Friday to tell him this I received a phone call from his nurse that afternoon saying basically, "Bring your swollen self to his office on Monday morning." The royal summons. By Sunday i was having severe back pain (unsurprising to me, especially considering all the extra weight of water I was hefting) and could barely waddle.

Monday, I paused in dismay....No way could I get a sock or even a slip on shoe over those feet....and quelled my vanity...wearing a HUGE sweatshirt and the biggest sweat pants I own as well as : bedroom slippers without socks. And even those, normally enormous on me, were tight.

they weighed me as I rolled on in. 202 pounds. if I hadnt' known that most of that excess was water, I would have cried.

So the good news is that the doctor told me that he believes that the 40 pounds I've gained in the past two months is ALL WATER!!!! He said in each foot/ankle I'm alone I'm hefting over ten pounds of fluid.

Can you imagine this?? HOPE FULLY someday soon, I will watch all that weight go right down the toilet!!!!! I've been so stressed about watching myself swell and swell, thinking I must be completely overdoing my food intake, but really not knowing where I was going wrong.

So the bad news is several fold. As my red blood cell count is inexplicably dropping there are several possibilities: 1) {Best case scenario} My blood pressure/ heart rate medicine is causing my body to hold on to fluid. And my difficulty in breathing (recent development) is due to fluid in my lungs. And the red cell drop is either due to damage to the bone marrow, causing it to reduce its output of RBC's.
2) the other possibility is this: my kidneys are shutting down. this causes the drop in RBCs as well as explains my swelling. This is a real danger because of the many really toxic meds I'm taking .

OR I could also be hemorrhaging internally in the Gastric tract somewhere as I did recently which necessitated a brief hospital stay. The loss of blood can cause breathlessness as well. So to rule this out, I am having an EGD and a colonoscopy by next week.

It's all got to be speedily, not only because the symptoms are in themselves dangerous...but because I've got to be cleared for surgery by November 1st as on the 8th I'm having shoulder replacement surgery done.

I had a great deal of blood tests done yesterday as well as a urinalysis and a chest xray. These tests will hopefully give us much information and steer us in the right directions. And then once I've had my endoscopes, we should have some clear answers....there still may be tests in the offing like a kidney biopsy etc...but before then would have some fairly clear idea of what is going on.

So if you are a praying person, ask God to deal with me in his love, mercy and wisdom and to give us some answers quickly.

I sure hope the medical community finds the answers for you quicker than for poor WISEWIFE, a Spark buddy whose horrible decline from a healthy middle aged working woman to a doddering weak woman with a propensity for falls and whose sudden death was a shock to us all and the reason NOT discovered by her Dr.'s no matter the multitude of tests they put her through :(( I fervently hope your medical team is more competent and discovers and treats your mysterious ailment quickly!!
Healing thoughts and soothing prayers being sent your way,

There you go again...challenging the medical community to find your ailment and then to heal it within a relatively short time period. I am praying that the cause will be immediately evident and that the healing process is straightforward and brief. All things are in His hands...your faith will sustain you through this latest upset.
