Adjusting to changes

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

There have been so many changes in life since I was last on SparkPeople! The combination of all of these changes and the stress at work has really caused me to put myself on the back burner and fall back into some of my old habits. But, I'm back because I'm ready to get myself back into shape - body and mind. I've gained about 20 pounds of what I'd originally lost back, and have also been depressed.

So what's so different from a year ago? Well, in June I was promoted to assistant manager where I work. I had 8 weeks of training out of state, only being home on the weekends. This really tested my relationship and was very hard for me, emotionally. I kept a fairly regular eating schedule, but working out was thrown out the door. My new position is a salary position, meaning I'm required to work 50 hours per week (10 hour days.) I didn't think it would be too different from working full time, but I was wrong.

When I was done with my training, I started work at a different store than I was in - which is 20 miles away from where I live. The atmosphere of the store and the people working in this particular store is so different from where I was in my hometown - a lot of negativity. I've been there for about 4 months now, and it is slowly getting better. I still feel myself affected by the negativity of those around me, though. This combined with some family issues has really put a lot of stress on me. I've also inherited another dog due to these family issues, a shih tzu! So now we're up to 3 canines in the house! As I always do when I'm stressed, I stop taking care of myself the way I should. This is going to change.

But, not all of the changes I've had recently are as negative. I did get engaged a few months ago and will be getting married in October. I'm very excited! As most brides do, I want to look damn good in my wedding dress. So, it's time for me to make some positive adjustments in my life and get back into shape. I miss feeling happy and positive about myself, so I'm going to start monitoring my fitness and nutrition just as I did when I very first joined SparkPeople. And I definitely need to be in shape and with a positive when we decide to have kids, which isn't too far off in the future! Wish me luck, and happy new year everyone!

    Hi Amber,
Your blog is full of good news and you are so right, that with the good comes stress. People often ignore this idea, but good news stress can be some of the most tricky to deal with. However, first of all, Congratulations on a well-deserved promotion, on adding to your family, and on your coming wedding. these are wonderful things. Anyone who is as loving with their canine family as you are will be an amazing mother, so best wishes to you as that decision and plan is part of your life too!!

I am so glad to hear from you that I don't want to think about why you are here. However, you came back before it's a big problem. 20 pounds is something that you can handle with care and confidence. You know the how-to and we will be your cheering section. You can also feel free to use me as someone to whine and fuss to to your heart's content. (Maybe focusing on someone else's stress will be good for me! Anyway, as do many others, I care and would be glad to wear some of your problems and weigh them in my heart too...)

It sounds like you have jumped in here with goals and your plan--so it sounds like fitting in some extra fitness is next on the agenda. Can you get some walking in at work during a break? I think that might be a starting place. How can you find those healthy opportunities around you?

Welcoime back! I am looking forward to the photos of your new doggie! Take care of yourself.
    Gentle hugs,

Changing jobs and working longer hours can be so stressful. Sounds like you're in the right frame of mind and have great motivation to make some positive changes. Best of luck to you, and congratulations on your engagement!
