Look on the Bright Side

Tuesday, February 07, 2012

Some days are more difficult than others to maintain a positive attitude. I am generally a very happy person, but there are days when stress, pain, fatigue, and yes laziness threaten to derail my plans for a healthier lifestyle.

I have been practicing portion control and some days I feel deprived. I grew up in a family that didn't have a lot of money, and I don't like feeling deprived...especially when it comes to food.
However, those same feelings of deprivation have turned me into someone who manages her money pretty well. I can easily put off spending money in the short term, so that I can enjoy financial security or save for a big ticket item down the road.

I'm trying to apply that same mindset to my eating. I may have to give up that extra serving, but if I do that consistently, the long term payoff will be better health.

As I left work today, I was very hungry. My husband and I have a small balance on an Outback gift card. We had talked about stopping by there for appetizers and a drink. I was in such a mood today that I thought "What the heck- get the Blooming Onion." Fortunately, my wiser self prevailed because I had planned out my dinner and it was already cooked and ready to serve when I got home.

As I was driving home, I did talk myself out of the Blooming Onion (and Outback altogether), but had to look up the calorie count...are you ready...depending upon who you ask, a Blooming Onion with dipping sauce is 2,000-3,000 calories! WOW!

On days I feel "food deprived" I just recount all that I had to eat that day, and give thanks for my many blessings...and drink lots of water.

Fabulous control there my friend! Having food ready when you get home makes the decision a little easier. The slow cooker is my friend. Now if only I could remember to make the menu's a month ahead of time it would be even easier lol

I know that when I have the urge to 'snack' I like to have a couple of handfuls of sunflower seeds handy - they take a bit to eat because they are still in the shell.

Anyway - GRATS my friend! You did yourself proud! :) :)

a good point . we might not consume as much as we want. if we only look up the caloric content of the desired item .when the last time i went with my hubby to our local dairy queen . He asked me what i wanted . I told him what i wanted and what i was ordering where two different things . He looked at me like i was insane . my clearer thinking kept me from consuming a lot more then i really wanted to devour . emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
