My First Virtual 5K

Monday, April 23, 2012

I recently completed the SP 5K rookie running program. I didn't jog the whole 5k on my last day, though I probably could have, because I did jog the whole 5k my next time out running.

I signed up for a virtual 5k. I was prepared to take walk breaks. I had my interval timer set for 3 - 13 minute jogging/2 minute walking intervals. I figured I would keep jogging longer than my planned intervals, knowing that I can jog for at least 20 minutes without stopping. But I wanted to have the timer set just in case. I feel the most pressure to walk in the beginning of my routine, later on, I feel warmed up and in a groove. When the first timer buzzed, I briefly considered walking, but realized there was no need to stop. My legs weren't threatening to give out and my breathing was steady. I kept going.

I was sure I would need to stop after my second jog interval (28 minutes jogging.) About halfway through that interval, I found myself going up a slight incline. I felt like The Little Engine that Could. I kept looking at the crest of the hill - telling myself to just get there and it's all downhill after. Responding with "I think I can, I think I can..." As I passed the crest of the hill, there was a moment of joy, I think I might have started jogging a bit faster. When my timer buzzed, marking that 28 minutes had passed, I knew I would finish without stopping.

I ran through that 2 minute walking interval and 4+ minutes into my next jogging interval - and I finished my 5k in 34 minutes and 37 seconds without walking!

Had I not been approaching an immense hill I would have kept jogging... I need to find a longer route!

It feels AMAZING!
