What ever happened to being polite?

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

I think that sometimes there is a better way to let someone know that maybe they didn't make the best choice...Instead of "that's really ugly" maybe something like, "I like you better in purple" Instead of "what did you do to your hair, it's awful" maybe "I like the hairstyle you wore at last week's barbecue" Instead of "that was really bad - don't ever make it again" maybe "I prefer your peach cobbler"

People will still understand what you mean and know that you don't want to hurt their feelings.

Politeness is a lost art nowadays

I am so with you on this one. I think that people feel bad about themselves and so they put others down to make themselves feel better. Im a great believer in politeness. You can be straight, but polite. We live in general in a rude, rushed and vulgar society. My dad used say about slang and swearing...."I sent you to school and your education should have covered learning to speak properly." So true dad.

Some people, like my husband, just lack the proper filter. It's like he can't process prior to opening his mouth. I can't tell you how many times he's stuck his foot in it! He always feel bad after, but it's just how he is.

Teresa, There's an art to it, and unless you're thoughtful enough to pay attention it's not learned easily. Once while out with my wife at an expensive restaurant I ordered a steak. When asked by the well dressed waiter how I wanted that steak cooked, I replied "well done". The look of horror on his face accompanied his response, "Sir, I assure you that we have an superb selection of meat here". I realized my faux pas and quickly said, "I'll have that cooked medium". "Excellent choice, sir", he said approvingly. I was taken by his unwillingness to embarrass me. Benny

I think that's where the old saying "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" comes in.

I agree 100%. Some people just don't get that most of us don't respond well to being insulted or shamed.
