A Gross, Putrid, Funky, Foul, Fetid, Smelly, Rotten, Stinking, Reeking Mess

Thursday, May 31, 2012

No exaggeration - lol.

Tuesday was a total nightmare from beginning to end. First of all some electronic device in the house was chiming all night long. Otherwise the day started like normal for a brief period. I got up and fixed breakfast and lunch as my son was off work and we were going to do cage cleaning. It was downhill from there. To say the least, the cages did not get cleaned.

I don't know if I mentioned the weird smell in the house when we came home late Saturday from decorating the graves and going to my MIL's house. I thought it smelled like a swimming pool. My son thought it smelled like chemicals. Hubby insisted it was the air conditioner but I didn't believe it. I cleaned out under the bathroom sink to make sure it wasn't leaking under there as you could smell it mainly in the kitchen and hall. I had planned on cleaning out under the kitchen sink and bar sink too.

Hubby got up Tuesday morning and was making his lunch and said the meat wasn't cold. He jerked open the freezer and everything in it was thawed out. It was dead. So my day was planned and it was a nightmare. Most things were still cool so I started taking the chicken out of the packages and cooking it all on trays in the oven. The same with the two pork tenderloins. There was a few packages of hamburger that were still good. I started 3 packages of beef roast in the crock pot. I turned on the spare dorm fridge to get it cold and soon after started loading things out of the dead fridge into both dorm fridges. My son got up and we started emptying the contents a lot of jars of condiments down the garbage disposal. Anything that was expired or close to it got pitched. We loaded the rotten fish and rotten meat into two coolers and tossed it into the pond. The fish, tadpoles, and coons will eat it. This stuff was disgusting. I didn't bother to clean the dead fridge that day. I didn't have time. I just mopped the mess in the floor up as best I could. My son and I worked constantly until 12:30 and we both were a mess and had to shower and change clothes. We were too grossed out to even eat lunch. I spent the rest of the day packaging the meat I cooked and freezing it in the spare freezer in the pole barn my hubby had plugged in and started up. We burned tons of trash and bagged up another bag of jars and cans for hubby to haul off.

I started looking at refrigerators online and decided between 5 brands - Samsung, LG, Kenmore Elite, Maytag, and Whirlpool Gold. I further narrowed it down by reading ratings from places like Good Housekeeping etc. Good Housekeeping did an excellent job of telling the pros and cons of each one. I checked the reliability record and found that Kenmore and Whirlpool had the least repairs. Whirlpool had been number one for 14 years in a row. Side by side fridges and fridges with icemakers and water dispensers (like I have) have the worst repair records. I then started looking at types, features, appearance, costs, etc. I wanted an energy star appliance, stainless, French doors without the external ice maker and water dispenser, a larger refrigerator area, adjustable shelves. I don't like a lot of bells and whistles. When my hubby got home we left to go look at refrigerators. We were determined to buy a large dorm fridge if nothing else.

We looked at Lowes and they didn't have any refrigerators that even closely resembled what I wanted. We went to Sears and found 3 that were more what I had in mind. An LG, Kenmore, and Whirlpool Gold. The LG was nice but too small. The Kenmore was bigger but not as big as I have. The Whirlpool was the largest and had all the features I wanted. It was also rated a #1 Best Buy. We decided to get the Whirlpool but they could not get my debit card to work. It was declined so they assumed it was over my purchasing limit. Hubby was really peeved. We found a large 4.3 C.F. compact "dorm" fridge to get until we got the new one and were able to purchase it. They said they would honor the sale price on the Whirlpool for us. We took the compact fridge home, plugged it in, filled it, and used it. We got home at 9 and ate McDonald's take out with our son. So after 12 hours at night with no food, I went 11 hours with no food, followed by another 12 hours with no food in the night again. Did I lose weight???? I doubt it.

The good news - Blocker has started to feel better the last couple of days. I had been hand feeding her anything she wanted in order to get her to eat. She is out of her house more. Instead of me offering her treats she is waiting for me and is coming to the front of the cage to beg like all the others. She has better stools now. She even jumped into hubby's hand and came out of her cage and got on hubby's lap.

Yesterday I got up before 6 to find the chiming noise. I discovered in the night that it chimed on the hour ever hour so I knew it was not the smoke detector or my phone. When my husband got up he suggested that maybe I had accidentally set some function on my clock by accident so I isolated it and it was the clock. He fixed it.

This place was a wreck after Tuesday. I made breakfast and didn't have to start lunch as we still had ours from then. I then started doing damage control. I quickly spot cleaned the pet cages and finished feeding the chinchillas and gave them a snack - sea salt bagel crisps. They love them. I bet the vet wishes they didn't. LOL. I swept the floors, emptied the waste cans, spot cleaned the bathroom, loaded the hamper, hung some towels to dry in the utility room, washed some dishes by hand, loaded the dishwasher and ran it, washed the coolers I used yesterday and disinfected the sink.

It looked like it would rain outside so I burned the trash again, shook the rugs, took out the compost, recyclables, fed the wildlife, swept the porches/patios/pavers/walks/la
wn furniture. The dead possum reeks to high heaven. I did see a turtle in the yard. I started cleaning the refrigerator and freezer and it took a couple of hours. It still looks like new but smells like a dead fish.

I called the bank to find out why my debit card didn't work and they didn't have a clue but said it should work. I then had to go to town to take some papers to the lawyer's office, pay the water bill, go to the newspaper office, and Sears. I bought the new fridge and we can pick it up later when we are ready. I came home and fixed supper.

Hubby got home and he had a couple of emails that he had to deal with. The usual pain in the butt estate stuff. He sent some emails and called the realtor and she called back and they talked about the house. He then returned to working on the fridge and found a fried relay switch. He wants to try to fix it and keep this fridge for a spare if he can. That will depend on if he can get this smell out.

Today it is supposed to rain but so far is just dark and thundering. We need a real rain and I hope we get it. The turtles always love the rain and seem to come out then. I saw a deer by the garden. I filled the bird feeder and have lots of birds. The fridge still stinks to high Heaven.

Whew, I nearly had a heart attack reading all your stressors boom boom boom one right after another, such an onslaught of yucky things happening. But, the end will be soon for you. Just a few irritating days to deal with. I didn't like the part where the debit card didn't work, that has happened to me! Embarassing, especially when you KNOW the money is in there. Gads.
Tell DH that something caused that relay switch to fry, they don't usually go bad on their own. Just saying.....
ANYHOW, hope the upcoming weekend is good for you and your family and critters, Namaste, Peace, Calm, Heck, meditate!

Yeah that reminds me of when my huge chest freezer died in the basement and it was full and had died a week prior to being discovered.

There's a recipe for cleaning the smell from refrigerators. I'll hunt it up and send it to you. My sisters uses it all the time. She has the record for stinkin' fridges.

Ugh - I know someone that lost power, unplugged the freezer to avoid frying the freezer when the power returned... and completely forgot. I think he ended up hauling the freezer to the curb and getting a hazmat crew to take it away, unopened.

In happier news, I'm so glad that Blocker is feeling better. You clearly needed to worry about other life items!

Wowzah! What a story! I know what it's like to have to toss/cook the "dead fridge" items. Although the last time the power went out in March (here in northern lower Michigan!) after a giant wicked snowstorm, it was out for 108 hours, so needless to say EVERYTHING in the fridge went.

I really liked reading your blog, it was fun and like, timelapse-y.

I hope that your new fridge is super awesome and everything you've hoped for!

If the refrigerator was "dead" why bother cleaning it? So sorry -- it's a constant battle to keep everything going. Kenmore is made by Whirlpool.

OMG not like you needed extra to do either!! and yes fish is gross and hard to get rid of. charcol and maybe vinegar as others have said. I am glad some was still okay to use but that just means a lot of cooking when you really don't want to or have time to.
HUGS and glad that is over!

I feel for you. What a mess. I know whats it's like to have no fridge. I lived in south Florida, hurricane knocked out power and it was days befor electricity was back on after Hurricane Andrew.
I hope you are able to salvage the old fridge. We used charcoal to remove the smell one time.
I hope that is the last disaster to strike.
    Take care,

OMG, I used to hear stories like that every once in awhile when I had the appliance store... I think the worst was one of our customers who had 3 BIG 31 cu ft. freezers in his shed went to the Phillipines for an extended vacation - 3-4 weeks as I recall. When they came home, the power was off in the shed and the freezers had been sitting there all that time with LOTS of fish in them - She was Filipino and they ate a LOT of fish I guess. He duct taped the freezers shut, loaded them into a truck and took them to the dump!! No other choice at that point.

I hope you get the smell out of yours, if the stuff has melted and got down into the liner, you may never get it clear out. We had to scrap more than one used refrigerator that worked well, but the smell never would go away - and of course, you couldn't sell one like that. So, I hope it goes away for you.

Sounds like a horrible couple of days for you... Hope it's better now!

Oh, you poor thing! I know what it's like to have a refrigerator go out on you. The scrambling to save what you can and then the wild shopping for a replacement. (Not one of those things you think about buying every day!) We now have two refrigerator freezers; one in the kitchen and the other in the garage plus a standing freezer which isn't plugged in right now. Finding one without an ice maker for the garage was our problem. They charge more for ones without icemakers. Well, I hope all of the drama is behind you for awhile. I know that you could use some relaxation!

What a mess!! I don't envy you. Ours stopped working slowly a couple of years ago. I ended up throwing a bunch out also. I ended up with a Samsung that I really liked, but I had read the Samsung Customer Service was not good. So we decided to buy an extended warranty through Lowe's. Luckily, we haven't had to use it.

As a side note (since I work at a bank), most banks have limits on debit cards for all account holders. So say their limit is $1000, and a customer wants to buy a bigger ticket item. The bank can temporarily raise that limit for a purchase then lower it again.

I hope the rest of your weeks is more uneventful.

Your "adventure" is horrible......I have had a couple of times where there were foul smells somewhere in the house, but never had one like your experience.
What a way to play havoc on a day.....glad you were able to salvage some of the meats.....and on the bright side....you won't need to do some cooking except for side dishes for awhile. Happy you were able to get the new fridge and this too shall behind you.....Have a better day..... emoticon

What a trooper - you seemed to have handled that whole mess like a soldier. Good for you. Personally, I don't handle chaos and crisis that well. I'm glad you were able to get the new fridge that you wanted. Hopefully you will be able to keep the one you already have and also be able to get that smell out. Have you thought about using baking soda to soak up the scent? Good luck with that.
