RANT: Please watch crosswalks when you drive!

Monday, June 04, 2012

I almost got hit by a car today. Scared the you-know-what out of me! I also said a very bad word or two to the driver--his window was open, and I was less than a foot away from him, but I still don't think he really realized it.

I was running along one of my local roads, on the multi-use path alongside it. Got to a busy corner with a stoplight. The light was green for me, but the crosswalk was an orange stop hand, so I hit the pedestrian crossing button. I waited through a whole cycle of the light until I got the pedestrian okay. I looked behind me, because lots of cars turn right at that corner, and since they have a green light, they often don't stop. Nobody there, so I proceeded.

Suddenly some guy comes up from the right really fast. He has a red light, but he can stop and proceed to a right turn on red. However, he didn't look at the crosswalk at all, and he didn't stop at all either. It was the fastest "rolling stop" I ever saw, and almost rolled right over my toes!! I could have (and thought about) slamming my hands on his driver's door, I was that close. Instead, I resorted to swearing at him (he proceeded through the intersection and drove away) and then tried to get my heart rate back down off the ceiling.

This is the first really close call I've had, and I imagine it won't be the last. But wow--very scary! Please, please pay attention to crosswalks when you drive! I would have felt bad if he had hit me, but I think he also would have been very unhappy. Nobody really wants to hurt anyone else like that, just carelessly. Plus I would have gotten blood all over his white car. :-(

Glad you're okay ! Was this idiot on his cell phone ? That's what I don't understand, what is so important than you need to talk on the phone and drive at the same time ? It's distracting !!! I really wish people would put down their cell phones and pay attention.

Worse, if this guy wasn't on his cell phone, then he was just plain reckless !! There really are some insane drivers out there.

It really pays to be careful and defensive when driving, walking, running or biking! I have been walking and biking to work, and always try to make eye contact with the drivers when I'm in or near the crosswalks, and I also look for pedestrians near the crosswalks when I'm driving. I have been surprised though, by folks who wear dark clothes at night (or twilight) and cross busy streets outside of the crosswalks....so I do agree that we all need to pay attention, and be careful no matter which side of the steering wheel we are on!

I had a car practically clip my back wheel when I had the right away. I don't think that anything has ever made my heart pound harder!

Thank you for being careful AND having great reflexes.

Very scary. I live in a small town (with no stoplights), and it is a State law that you MUST stop for pedestrians who are within a crosswalk. I walk to work so I cross the main street 4 times a day. It's amazing how I can be standing in the crosswalk and people whiz right on by, sometimes even wave at me. What's really amazing is the number of people -- adults and kids alike -- who are either texting or dialing their cellphone and don't even look up. Mind you, this is the main business district street. A very big pet peeve of mine!! Glad you are okay. I guess we need to be defensive pedestrians as well as defensive drivers!

Glad you were not hit. I think everyone needs to slow in every aspect of life this world is in high gear and needs to slow down I feel sorry for the little children starting school they don't even have a chance to be a kid anymore so much is crammed in to them all at once. Take Care Brenda

    So glad you are okay!

We were hit coming home from an RV trip by someone who made a left turn right in front of us...I still don't know if she just didn't look, thought we had a stop sign, etc. Luckily my husband almost always drives the RV somewhat under the speed limit, and was able to swerve so as not to broadside her...people just do NOT pay attention! Luckily, none of us were hurt either, and motorhomes and RVs are replaceable.

I'm with Beckysrn... whether you bike, run, walk, or drive: be careful out there! I blogged a similar series after having some "interesting" encounters while biking a couple of weeks ago.

Glad you're OK, and still around to pull that heart rate back down.

Yes it is scary, but there is also the other side of the coin. I had several teenagers with little kids come out from behind a car to my left (I was in the right hand lane) and I was going at a green light when they ran right in front of me.. I almost hit a couple of them, then they proceeded to call me a b**** (among other things), giving me the finger, and all sorts of crap. Scared me to death because they were running against the light, and they had the little kids. However, there is a God--there was a cop right behind me and she pulled them over and read them the riot act and told them they were lucky she wasn't citing them!!
I guess my whole point though is that everyone has to pay attention because we all are in this together.
    I'm glad you're okay.

This is a great blog because I agree, many drivers do not pay attention when they are driving. I almost got hit downtown St. Paul on Friday 5 times during my run. Drivers just were not paying attention. I yelled at 2 cars that had their windows down. So annoying and scary at the same time.

    Glad you are ok though!
