Review on FitBit Steps/Calories Burned Tracker

Tuesday, June 05, 2012

I am going to start by saying that I LOVE MY FITBIT. I love that it tells me how many calories I have burned throughout the day and how many steps I have taken. I find myself walking more than usual because I want to reach 10,000 steps per day (which means I am burning extra calories). It’s like you are competing against yourself.

It also measures your sleep and tells me how many times per night I wake up. It is truly amazing. It comes with a cloth holder to wear around your wrist and the Fitbit fits in there comfortably while you sleep.

And guess what, I got my Fitbit 3 weeks ago for Mother’s Day from my son. 2 weeks later I lost it!!!! Oh my God!!! I wanted to die. It fell while I was walking in the mall because I did not secure it properly. $100 down the drain. But wait, I had read that the Fitbit company had great customer service so I wrote them an email explaining how I was so upset that I lost it and it was my Mother’s Day present and guess what? They responded 24 hours later and told me they were shipping me a new replacement for free!!! OMG I didn’t know that still happened in this world. I must say I love Fitbit and I love the Fitbit company. Here is the Fitbit description if you are interested:

It is a tiny clip that can clip onto your clothes.

• Calories burned
• Steps taken
• Distance travelled
• Physical activity duration and intensity
• Time till sleep
• Number of time awaken during sleep
• Actual sleep time

The sensor is a 3-dimensional motion sensor

Synchronization: Automatically syncs wirelessly with the fitbit base.

Device display: Simple display that shows today's data: steps taken, activity level, calories burned, and miles walked.

Battery life: 2 weeks till depletion on full day and night wear

Web management interface subscription price: Free. Optional premium upgrade available for $49.99 per year. I use the free one and it’s wonderful.

Web management food tracker is simple and super fast to log food (especially when logging common foods). Food database is pretty complete and also supports custom foods. I still use Sparkpeople and well. Call me Maniacal.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for all the info on the FitBit, I've been using an Omron pedometer for years but I really want to know what type of sleep I'm getting (not enough lol). After reading many reviews and comments I'm going to order the FitBit on Monday and it should arrive by Wednesday. emoticon

I bought a fitbit last month. I love it. I wear it all day everyday. Definitely worth the price.

I agree with you...I LOVE my fitbit !!! I also got the scale after using the fitbit for a week...it seems like a lot of money, but if I compare it to the cost of weight watchers it turns out to cost me less in the long run. I really need the accountability to keep me losing weight and on track. I am NOT a techno geek, but I have found this VERY SIMPLE to use !!!

I'm glad I searched and found your review. I am thinking of getting one and between your recommendation and the comments here I am just about convinced. My only dilema is that I do stand up paddle boarding and I don't want to fall in and get it wet. I shouldn't be falling in, but you never know! I will google and see if there is a case or anything I can use with it.

Love mine, too. Thanks for the info on their wonderful customer service..

I wore a Bodybugg armband for 3 years and liked it as well, but it has a subscription fee and is larger and always visible. And for me, the Fitbit's step count is the most accurate pedometer.

My 3 daughters have Fitbits and they have "friended" me on the Fitbit site, so that the 4 of us can compare stats on the Leaderboard, even though we don't live together. Two live close to me and the other lives in another state. It's a nice way of staying in touch, even with all of our busy lives. I'm fighting to hold onto my #2 spot this week. Two weeks ago I kicked their butts :) My Fitbit even said, "You Rock", that week. It has a "chat" feature that can be enabled, so that a couple of words show up on it when one does well. It made me feel like it likes me (I know, it's an inanimate object, not a pet).

There's a phone app, MyFitnessPal, that has a great food data base. My girls love it and have convinced me to log my food there, since that's where they are and the Fitbit can be linked to it (a good suggestion for SparkPeople) and we can leave comments to inspire one another. We all dislike food logging, even though we know we do better when we track. The app tells our friends when we haven't logged for "x" number of days. My girls swoop in and say "Hi, Mom" when that happens.

My name there is WoodsBooger (I know, disgusting name, it's what people in the mountains where I was born call Sasquatch, aka Big Foot, a creature as elusive as a healthy maintainable goal weight) if any of you want to "friend" me.

EDIT: Correction. Fitbit name is Barbara Beasley. WoodsBooger is the one I use on MyFitnessPal, which syncs with Fitbit and my Withings scale. I wish SparkPeople would make it possible to sync Fitbit with SP.

Great Review! I love mine as well. Super motivating! I have never had to use the customer service dept and hope to keep it that way, but all the stories I have heard about people contacting them are excellent! It is nice to know some companies still care!

    Excellent review!
I, too, agree that FB's customer service is AWESOME! I have been the proud owner of my FB for over two years and in the last month or so it has become increasingly difficult to read the screen. I emailed the company and after attempting some possible fixes without any success I figured that I would need to purchase a replacement. But no, instead I received an offer of a no-charge replacement! This company truly knows how to treat its customers!

Finally, you are so right about competing against yourself. Each day I attempt to better the previous day! The FB has certainly been an important tool in my road to good health!

Thank you for sharing your review.

Thanks for writing the review. I wa really torn between the fit bit and the HRM that I ultimately got. For my needs the HRM works better, but I wish there was something that did it all emoticon
