Purging... (no, not that kind!)

Thursday, July 19, 2012

In addition to working on dropping weight and getting healthy, I've put myself on a "stuff" diet. I'm purging and organizing all of my closets, cupboards, drawers, garage, and any other spot that tends to collect "stuff". I made an accountability pact with a friend - we check in with each other (usually by email) every Monday and Thursday to report on our actions accomplished since the last check-in. We agreed that, because our lives tend to be more busy and complicated some weeks than others, we get to define for ourselves as we go what constitutes an "adequate" action step that meets our expectations of forward movement. So sometimes we might report on completing a whole closet, sometimes a section of a closet, other times just a small drawer. But it's all "Success" since we're moving forward. The accountability with my friend really helps me to hold the focus. If I were doing this on my own, I would likely have lost momentum and stopped by now.

My motto as I go through each space is "Be Ruthless!" As I hesitate with something in my hand, deciding whether it goes back in the closet or not, those two words re-inspire the boldness it sometimes takes to live a lean lifestyle. I've made many trips to Goodwill already, and filled lots of trash bins. It's liberating to let go of so much stuff. And life is getting easier, as the stuff I do want is more within view and easy reach. I went to the Container Store and splurged on some pretty organizing bins and cool gadgets, such as:

I sometimes enjoy just opening a cupboard or closet to look at it now! I have a loooong way to go, but the progress I've made is creating its own momentum, and I've developed sort of a system now and I actually look forward to tackling each new space.

I'm still purging and organizing, and will be for quite a long time to come. Working my way through the whole house, bit by bit. I took a couple of weeks off due to travels, but I'm back at it again. The accountability with my friend is still working great to sustain momentum. Thanks for asking, Phyllis. (I will reply to your other questions via SparkMail.)

Oh, I so need to follow your very fine example! This is exactly what I need to do at my house!!! Thank you. I have a friend who needs to do this too. I think we could set up accountability like you did.

What a great idea! I've got to attack the bedroom closet one of these days. Especially since I have to find some clothes that fit! We moved five years ago and I got rid of a lot of clutter then. Have you ever noticed how your stuff expands to fill the space you have? Time to go through each room and clean out the clutter again!

Good for you!! That's an awesome idea! Cleaning out my closets is something I keep putting off. I think you have inspired me! That can be my first project once I get back home from visiting family. Thanks! emoticon

I love this idea you're working on. I can understand the purging as I have been doing it almost daily whilst packing for my move. Ugh, can't wait for the first. Things are okay here, but I need to keep purging and packing everyday. Today is my sewing room. You just stick to doing what you are doing. It is simple to travel lightly. Nothing like a house that has been purged from all the clutter. I always believed a place for everything and everything in it's place. Now if I could only get that way. In my new place I will have to get that way.
I'd love to see your closets. Hey, I will be coming back in three months, would you like to get together for lunch. I always did want to meet you esp since you live in my neck of the woods.
Just let me know. We could meet at a restaurant or park or wherever we think up.
