Great way to enjoy an anniversary

Monday, August 06, 2012

This weekend was my anniversary. My very dear husband and myself have been together for 39 short years. We've owned a vacation home in the Sierras for the last 5 years and that has been a great purchase. It is so relaxing and beautiful up there that we start thinking about going back whenever we start on our way back home after being there. So it was a mutual decision to spend our anniversary weekend up there. One of my favorite performers, John Fogerty was performing at a winery near our vacation place so we saw him on Friday. He admits to being 67 years old but he is as good a performer as he was 30 years ago. We had a great time.

On Saturday we went out to a great local Italian restaurant called Serafina's and I splurged on wine, fried calamari, chicken marsala with garlic mashed potatoes and summer vegetables and we shared a delicious chocolate lave cake (whipped cream on the side).

This was the first real departure from the diet I put myself on when joining SP last year and I really feel like I earned it. In the course of all of the reading I've done on SP I know that I have truly made a life style change that I can stick with for the rest of my life. I felt so bloated the next morning I knew that the pleasure of having that meal was real but fleeting. If there is any chance that the old wives tale that you can shrink your stomach is true that is just what has happened.

I feel almost good about returning to my measured cup of cheerios and blueberries after the Oahu French toast (with pineapple syrup) and fritatta zucchini that I made for us this weekend and the other fattening meals that we enjoyed in our celebratory mode. It almost feels good to go back to tracking food this morning. (Another departure from good practises that I took this weekend)

I know that I would not feel as good about returning to healthy mode if I had denied myself any of the culinary luxuries that I engaged in. Both my DH and I are happy to turn back to our healthy ways this morning and I don't feel the least bit guilty for having had an awesome celebration.

My husband and I will be celebrating our 42nd anniversary on August 15, and I feel that we deserve to splurge on ourselves after all of the sacrifices we have made to reach this anniversary. Couples today throw in the towel after a few years if things start to get rough.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!! emoticon
