The Taper Has Begun...

So, I have my running schedule posted by my desk.17 full weeks of 5days/week of running. Over the past few months, as I complete each run, I put a big X through that run. Its nice to see all the big X's. An accomplishment of sorts.

Sometimes I know exactly what I'm running for the next couple days & sometimes it's like a little surprise. This morn, I looked at the schedule, not knowing what I was up against & was totally taken back...a 4k...hmmm, checked it again. I haven't run that distance in quite some time. I usually prepare to be gone anywhere from 45minutes to 2 1/2hrs.....not today:)

I have to laugh cuz a few months ago I could barely bust out a 4k. Wow, what sticking to a training schedule does for endurance. I am very excited to run this morn, nice to have such a quick distance, I'll be back before anyone even realizes I'm gone.

Should I pick up the pace or should I just settle in to my comfortable pace? I've been told to trust the taper...I've actually heard this quite a bit. But now that I'm in the midst of it I'm 2nd guessing it. I scanned through the next 2 weeks and the distances seem so short compared to the last couple months.

My half is next weekend.

Any advice, my friends, for the taper??

    Maura said it best, 'Embrace the taper'! Your body will thank you for it.
    After all those Xs you need to let your body rest & heal before race day so that you will be a your peak. I'm so excited to hear how it goes!!

    You taught me a new word in sports' terminology today! I had to google it after reading your blog as I had no idea what the taper period is. From what I read, all athletes recommend this just before a big event. It sounds logical to me. You've surely pushed your body to its limits during the last weeks of training and now it needs to restore all its energy and get ready for the big day. I'm definitely not the one to give advice, but I would do as everyone says: Trust the taper!

    Embrace the taper!! I know, easier said than done. Run at your normal pace. Now is not the time to work on speed. Trusty our body and give it the rest it so obviously deserves. 17 weeks of Xs!!! Holy accomplishment Tammy! I am so happy for you. Enjoy these next 2 weeks.
