Boy Scout Philmont Trip

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

To those who are not familiar, The Boys Scouts of America have a summer High adventure trip which includes a 7 day and a 10 day hiking trip through the Colorado Rockies. As a parent of an up and coming Eagle Scout(just around the corner) one of the most talked about trips all scouts want to do is Philmont. What happens is a group of scouts from the same troop hike in and out following guided routes through the Rockies, all equipment is carried in and out on the backs of the scouts and adult leadership, some routes are 50 miles and some are 75 miles, I have heard of a 100 mile hike but not really sure. Well to make a long story short, our troop has been given the opportunity to have 3 groups go next year. And since my son is fixing to be an Eagle Scout and the next opportunity to go will be after He leaves scouts we will be going next year. Now for the adventure, for the next year we will be working on building our stamina and endurance for the trek, we have decided to attempt the 50 miler. As a 50 something parent the idea of hiking in the mountain is very enticing and the opportunity to see things with my son is beyond comparison. I know this will make our bond ever more stronger and hopefully the old man will not embarrass him to much ( I do enjoy doing that). What I am not sure is the total trip, will I be able to make the entire trek, will the practice hike be endurable (we live in the heart of Texas) so temperature will be against us, there is no way to prepare for the altitude but the distance should be attainable. I guess I am going to use this to track and update any who see this to the practice and hardships that we will face so we will be ready for our Philmont Adventure. If you have any personal information on the Philmont Adventure( have you done it, some hints what to look for, what should I bring) would be appreciated.

My son's best friend did it. It's definetly an endurance test. You carry a heavy back pack with everything you need in it for the trip. Your son needs really good hiking boots. T need to be are broken in before he goes.
