As someone who has been vegetarian for more than fifteen years, the material in the movie wasn't new to me. I started eating meat around a year ago. I eat only a very small fraction of my calories from meat. I do get a good number from dairy which isn't the best. Cheese and yogurt have lots of calories and protein. To get the calories and protein that I need from beans, I would need to eat much more volume of food. I could easily do without the cheese if I wanted to follow the movie's recommendations, but yogurt is a more regular part of my diet.

I eat fish once or twice a week. Chicken tends to make me sick so I avoid it. The only meat my family members eat is chicken and fish, no other seafood. If I want to eat beef, pork or other seafood, I need to eat that outside the house and I don't usually have money for that so I eat other animal products less than once a month.

I believe that eating very little animal products and processed foods has been fairly healthy for me during the last eighteen years, but it has not made me thin. The pea soup I made for dinner tonight would be a food recommended by the doctors on Forks over Knives. I eat that way more than ninety percent of the time.

Most Americans say that they have a healthy diet. At least, I can say honestly that I believe I do. I don't think I need to be vegan or nearly vegan to have a healthy diet. I also don't think it's necessary to avoid all 'junk food' to eat healthy.

I was vegan for five years and I never lost a single pound, and I struggled constantly with flagging energy. I know others who lost weight being vegan and felt great on a plant-based diet, but not me. I honestly think the best thing to do is to listen to your own body and eat what's right for you, what makes you feel the best and the most energetic. For some, that's veganism and vegetarianism. For others (like me), it's lots of veggies supplemented with some lean meat and dairy. You know what's best for you. I had to stop watching movies like that because they always make me second-guess myself. Best of luck to you!!
