thinking about exercise

I don’t know of any research in this area, but I have heard that fit people exercise, not that exercising makes one fit. I mean that there are people that liked to exercise, like myself, that go out of their way to exercise. I feel confided or trapped when I don’t get enough exercise. I need to walk, do housework, bike ride, something everyday. I feel restless without it. Even when I worked retail and was on my feet at my job nine hours a day, I lifted weights at home, bike rode and took long walks.

I know many people that have exercised all their lives. I have periods of weeks or months when I don’t exercise, but when I’m happy and healthy I do. My live-in boyfriend joined the Y. I’m on his membership, but he doesn’t go. He’s reluctant to exercise no matter how much he knows that he would feel better if he did. He claims it’s boring and a waste of time.

Exercising one or more hours a day to me is normal. I feel bad if I don’t get to do it. I wonder if there are people that enjoy exercise for exercise sake and others that just don’t. I think the way we approach exercise makes a difference. For example, many people like walking at a slow pace, but the fitness industry tells us that we have to walk fast for it to be exercise. We need to find a way to encourage people that like to move to do movement that they enjoy. Help people find movement that they enjoy and not treat people badly if they abhor exercise.

I think research needs to be done on how to make people want to exercise more. What makes people that enjoy exercise keep doing it. I suppose there are hundreds of questions about exercise that hasn’t been answered or I don’t know where to find the answers.

    I was speaking about articles like one I saw on SP daily blog that suggested walking faster was better. I was talking about people that get discouraged because they feel that walking slowly isn't exercise. When I was a teen and young adult, I didn't know walking was exercise. Walking was walking. I did it because I was restless or I had some place to go or both.

    I'm with you in that I like to exercise (cardio anyway) and have written about being in the minority in this respect. I've also put a lot of thought into the effect of intensity.
    Depending on a person's starting fitness level, what's considered exercise to them may differ. We've got to encourage people to start somewhere. As they become more fit, their intensity will increase naturally. At least I hope so.

    I don't particularly like strength training, but I know I have to do it. After a break I always start slowly so I don't hurt myself. It may not look like much to a dedicated weight lifter, but it's my starting point and if I keep it up I will improve, with heavier weights and number of reps.

    Of course, we shouldn't deceive ourselves and complain about not seeing results if the level of exercise is low. Patience is needed. We can improve slowly, but we will improve if we keep at it.

    I disagree that you have to walk fast for it to be considered exercise. I believe any walking whether slow or fast, but that works your heart more than sitting around does, is exercise. My hubby couldn't walk fast if his life depended on it but he gets out there and walks as much as he can, so he's working his heart muscles. After 10 minutes he can barely catch his breath, but he's walked. But I also think any walking done that's not your normal routine is added exercise. You may not see it immediately, but over time it all adds up. Some people can't do more than a slow shuffle walk. But it's exercise for them. Some people do need to do more to get their heart rate up, but for some it doesn't take a lot. emoticon
