Day 439A: The Morning Quickie

People coming to view the house - I try not to get my hopes up that "THIS time there'll be an offer," but hope springs eternal, ain't?

I sometimes think, if the house appeals to them, if they are drawn to it, they will see past any clutter or dust or dirty sinks... and then I go right ahead and wash and vacuum and scrub.

Here's hoping the magic works... Have a good'un, Sparklers - carpe diem!

    In Sweden it is hard to sell houses this time of year..the season starts in march...althoug it would be smart to do the business now because mostly you sign for getting the house/apartment about three monts later.

    I am baffled about the "styling" concept that is used nowadays because it actually works and I am certain that I got my house reasonable cheap and fast because the sellers did not move a finger to make it attractive.

    I agree with the de-cluttering and cleaning,, When we looked at houses, I made a beeline to teh sinks,, I looked under the sinks to see if the cleaning products were NEW or kind of old and rusty.. I also smelled every room for mustiness, animals, smoking or moisture..

    If it was a brand new home, if they had a cat, we immediately crossed that off the list.. smokers too..
    a plate of fresh cookies would have swayed us if there were no cats though..

    I hope you get an offer. I hope you get an excellent offer! You never know what will compel people. The first house we had was chosen because there was an old copy of the poems of Bobbie Burns on display. Next house was a bit of a mess, but we fell for the window seat. Then the next one was also a bit of a mess but was one block from the library. So you never know what whims people might bring or what little unexpected things will attract them.

    So here's hoping that your special je ne sais quoi will bring in the offers!

    Good Luck!! I remember when we saw the first house we eventually bought, we both knew it was the "winner" as soon as we looked at it. Later, we talked about it and both said the same thing: it smelled wonderful!! (there was a roast cooking in the oven). When we eventually sold that house, the realtor told us that he loved the sweet smell of the nectarines in the bowl of fresh fruit we had on the table. So, in addition to the scrubbing, which I do think is necessary, you might also want to cook something, or light a nice candle!!

    I know feeling all to well. I rushed to tidy house when realtor phoned to say they were bringing buyer and crushed when no bid. House sold over Xmas to extremely overweight couple that I never expected to buy home with two sets of stairs. Good luck!

    Speaking as a former Realtor (a brief sojourn Joe and I had the last time we lived in Florida), no matter how charming your house is, dirty sinks and dusty corners send signals into the unconscious that there's something wrong with the house and sometimes cause the people to wonder whether the house has been maintained properly (is there a pipe about to burst in that dusty wall). It's one of the most simple and easy things to do to sell your house: clean and declutter. We had a neighbor next door to us in our old neighborhood who had an incredible home with a beautiful pool and spa, great privacy in the back, but took years and years to sell their house because they had it packed from stem to stern with "stuff." The garage was literally a storage shed with things jammed in so that a car could not have even had the front bumper in. Hordes of people came and went but it wasn't until they moved out (and thus cleared out) that the house sold and it sold instantly.

    So, scrub away, my dear friend and very best of luck to you and your lucky buyers!
