more daily challenges

Monday, March 18, 2013

I'm into the ninth day of SparkCoach's Consistency & Motivation program. I'm enjoying it very much as the daily challenges have been something I can attempt or do, and on a daily basis.

When I first started the SparkCoach program, I thought that I was going to need to find lots of extra time in an already full life. But as part of my non-negotiable self care, I look forward to viewing the daily program and finding out what the daily challenge is for the day.

Day 5 - Find one inspirational or motivational song

This was easy. For over a year, while I am cleaning I have been putting on my CD player the soundtrack from the movie "Red Dog". To choose one song is difficult, but I'll say "Evie - Let Your Hair Hang Down (Part 1)" by Stevie Wright ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=

Day 6 - Monitor my hunger levels

Using the table on www.sparkpeople.com/reso
I was able to note that I eat mostly when my hunger level is 3 (Pretty hungry, stomach is growling a little) or 4 (Starting to feel a little hungry). I had never thought about my satiety until now, but it generally rates as 5 (Satisfied, neither hungry nor full) or 6 (A little full, pleasantly full).

I'm finding that I cannot eat large portions anymore, even of favourite foods. This can be problematic when visiting Mam or Dad when they have made meals especially for me coming to see them.

Day 7 - Add more activity into the day

This day was during the week that I started some casual work teaching and demonstrating to Medical Students during a laboratory session. So instead of sitting at a computer most of the day, three hours of it was on my feet assisting students to do what they needed to do in their microbiology practical class.

So just standing up for greater parts of the day was really helpful - I was in bed by 9pm, and slept for 9 hours! But it was a good sort of sleep not an exhausted sleep. So I'm working on seeing how I can stand at my computer next, but I will need to get a ledge or table to be able to do this. But I'm going to call the occupational health and safety people to see if they can help me. In the meantime, I stand when I can, and walk to see my colleagues rather than using the phone or email. I'm not sure my boss likes my continued interruptions, but until he mentions it, I'm going to keep doing it.

Day 8 - Give myself a pep talk

This was the most difficult challenge so far. But by taking on board the hints from the video, I was able to speak to myself more positively as if I was helping a friend. I am now wondering why I'm kinder to my friends than I am to myself!

Day 9 - Plan tonight for breakfast tomorrow

I'm pretty happy with my breakfast routine - that is, I have one, and I eat breakfast. But I followed the links to other breakfast suggestions and bookmarked it for future reference. I'm quite happy to eat the same thing every morning (cocoa, coffee, bran with banana and milk). But this morning I did make the French Toast recipe ( recipes.sparkpeople.com/
) and found out what egg beaters are. I substituted an egg white for the egg beaters, which I was pretty chuffed about, because I was going to make meringues. By using them for breakfast it was helpful to my calorie range and food budget for the week.

Now, I'll have to wait until tomorrow for the next challenge emoticon
