Interesting Facts You Should Know

Thursday, March 28, 2013

In looking up reserch for my essay i came across an article that talked about Canadian healthcare. In it the authors were talking about a sin tax that is placed on alcohol and tobacco; but it can even include taxes on sugary beverages and food that is not very nutritional. These kind of taxes can be used to support healthcare. In Denmark they recently introduced a tax on chocolate, candy, and ice cream and will soon be introducing a tax on sugary soft drinks. Plus a tax on saturated fat is also planned. Can you imagine the hulabaloo if they did that here? This artice is from the Canadian Medical Association Journal dated March 22, 2011. They probably already are doing just that. If that happened here some of us could not afford to even buy chocolate very much or ice cream. I have several to go through yet and it will be a long winded process today. Plus i also lost 4 pounds this week.

Wooooo hoooo hoooo 4 lbs down!

I will not be holidng my breathe waiting for our government to do anything. This is where we have to take charge of our own health and when possible reach out to our friends and neighbors to share the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. More importantly, we can work to model our good eating and fitness habits.

    Keep up the good work!

I lost my weight over 4 decades ago and have kept it off without any taxing intervention by the government. Those taxes are more about revenue enhancement than an attempt to alter behavior.

I can't remember which state it is (either MN or PA- I lived in both) but they charge tax on candy and soda already. They are non-essential items.

There is a lot to be said for some of those taxes. They do have an impact. Not sure I love the idea though.

Great job on the weight loss! You are right, the Mayor of NY had such a problem with the sugary drinks issue...

Congratulations on the lost 4 pounds! emoticon

Hmmmm, if they did that here, it would help cut down on obesity, maybe. But I doubt that it would pass Congress:
    - First, because our Congress doesn't DO ANYTHING!
    - Secondly, I think there would be rioting in the streets
    - Thirdly, whoever in Congress voted FOR it, would be voted out at the next election.

Thanks for educating us. : ) And continued good fortune in getting your resources for this essay.
