I'm thinking about returning to eating a vegetarian diet. I was vegetarian for seventeen years. I quit January 2012. I tried to incorporate meat into my diet. I found out that beef didn't like me. I must have known that years ago, but have forgotten. I used to have problems with pig fat before I became vegetarian many years ago. I don't have that problem now. I can eat greasy pizza without a problem as long as it's light on the cheese. So with my problems now with beef and chicken, I see no point in working around it and trying to eat a limited number of meat products.

I bought lots of beans yesterday. I have lots of fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator. I'm ready to give it a go.

Since I've been on Sparks People, I've learned that I have many more trigger foods for my IBS. A few that I thought might be triggers were added. A number that I didn't know were added. I feel there is little that I can eat that doesn't make me run to the bathroom. I figured a low-fat vegetarian diet is the way to go.

Now, I hope I can get my weight to stabilize. Eating less fat might lower daily calories a bit. I still find beans very filling so it don't take much to fill me up. I find if I eat a bowl of beans that I can't eat other foods for at least a few hours. Many fruits are filling for the same reason that sweets are; fruits are a nature source of fructose. A banana or large apple can keep me satisfied for hours just like a box of candy, but it's a healthier choice. Fruit is more than sugar. It had fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.

I joined Eat to Live a group based on Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book, "Eat to Live". The book recommends a vegan diet high in beans, fresh fruit and vegetables. It has a weight recommendation in the book. For women, 95 pounds for the first five feet and then four pounds for each inch afterwards. I'm 5'2.5" so that would 105 pounds. I'm currently about 120 so by his chart, I could lose another 15 pounds before I was too thin. I doubt that I'll lose that much more weight. As I mentioned before, my weight loss is part intentional and part unintentional. I don't know where my weight will settle.

I don't know if I should let myself lose more weight or try to keep myself from losing. Fighting my body is hard. I'll just eat healthy, exercise regularly and see where my weight goes. I'm going to fight hard if it starts to go back up. That's enough for now.

I might try more beans in my diet, how do you flavor them if not using meat?

Everyone has different needs and preferences so I don't know if this would be helpful to you, but here goes. I always ate a lot of meat. I still eat it, but I cut back substantially to limit the fat, cholesterol, and calories. I start my day with a shake made of 100% egg white protein and ground flax seed. This gives me the protein I need and really curbs my appetite. If that is something that wouldn't set off your IBS, you might give it a try.

I dropped down to my "ideal" weight but was not comfortable there. I gained a few, perhaps a few too many and now I am working on getting back down to my high school weight (only 3-4 pounds to go). My issue is the fat on my hips and thighs. My body just does not seem to want to let it go.

That is the way I lost my weight and then have maintained it -just doing all the right things diet and exercise wise and see where the scale number stabilizes. I don't stress over the numbers. I really enjoy the vegetarian lifestyle, nothing beats it. The bonus is that its good for your health to get in all those freggies. Good luck with your plan, you can do it!
    Have a great weekend!

I actually feel much better since I quit meat last year. Cheese always triggered my appetite, beans on the other hand keep me very full. I also like carbs, like homemade breads and pastas, and I wasn't able to loose any weight when I ate them with dairy and meat. Occasionally, I have and egg or a piece of fish.
