April Update and calorie number musings..

I feel like I'm doing well. The last few weeks I have been doing much better at logging my food online and hitting my exercise goals. I'm currently logging on Myfitnesspal. I don't have anything against Sparkpeople but I went to put their app on my phone and it wasn't free. It looks good, yes, but I'll all about free LOL.

I'm starting week 4 of Couch 2 5K this week. Its not easy but I am making headway from where I was. My mud run is on the 27th so I won't be completed in time for the race but that is ok too. I'm ok with being in much better shape than when I started.

I am also trying something new with weight training. I'm doing Stronglifts 5x5. You can google it and the e-book is free. The basics of the program are there is a workout A - Squats, Bench Press, Pendlay Rows, and B - Squats, Overhead Press, Deadlift. You only lift 3x's a week and alternate workouts. Its a barbell workout and you lift heavy. I have seen some people make some great headway with this so I'm going to give it a shot. I like its simplicity. My only issue is I will have to get a squat rack at some point...and that may come sooner rather than later.

I have also played with my numbers. I don't have the link offhand but there was a good post on Myfitnesspal laying out how you come up with how much you should eat a day. You need to know your body fat percentage which you can ballpark using body tape measurments. Then there is a BMR formula that uses your lean body mass and is more accurate. Then I think you take those numbers and figure out your Daily Calorie Expenditure. Something like that.

At any rate I figured out with light exercise (and I probably should be characterized as more than that) I need 2000 a day which is more than most fitness websites come back with. I never did like how Sparkpeople, and even MyFitnessPal comes back with that I should be eating only 1200 a day to lose weight. Especially when I know you have to feed muscles to grow them and I keep reading various places to you have to eat more to lose more. I'm currently setting my calories for the day to 1750 and I'm not stressing if I eat a bit more than that.

Its just so hard to know what numbers are the right ones. We are so programmed to eat less to lose weight. When I looked up the next step up above Light exercise it came back that I should eat 2200. If that is true I could probably safely eat 1900 or 2000 but still I would rather set my numbers a little lower. I guess with the numbers game its one of those things where I'll just have to keep an eye on things and play around with them as things progress.
