My first look at the surgical site

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Today I got the original cast off (it's been on for three weeks) and it was my first look at the surgical site.

Well, to the lay person it probably looked pretty gruesome, but knowing exactly what my surgeon set out to do and how, the site looked great. I had absolutely no bruising (due to her using my own blood by-products to seal the bone and stem cell sheaths on the two tendons). My husband got a bit queasy looking at it, but really it looked good.

There were about 30-35 staples closing up the incision, which runs about 8-9 inches beginning at mid foot and running beneath my ankle bone and up the back of my leg about two inches.

The doctor said she was very pleased with the way it looked and then did a series of range of motion, which didn't hurt.

Then the staples came out. I thought I was going to go through the ceiling. It absolutely was more painful than anytime after the surgery. On a scale of 0-10 it was 50!

Then I told the doctor that I wanted to bathe my leg and shave my leg before the new cast went on. So she set me up with a make-shift sponge bath and it felt so good to clean my leg and shave the nearly one inch hair growth. After that was finished, I slathered a nice layer of ultra moisturizing cream. Then I told them I was ready for my cast.

I chose a beautiful bluish/purple color, almost the same color as my spark page. I figured that would go with everything...at least for the next two weeks.

If you have read the other surgery blogs, you will understand why this day was so important to me. I am still amazed at the knowledge and skill of my wonderful surgeon. Because of her and the generosity of the woman who donated her placenta, I will be able to resume regular activities without any pain.

Looking forward to May 7 when I get the cast off completely and get to go into a boot. Freedom At Last!

I will have to go catch up on what you have been through. May 7th will be here before you know it! Though I'm sure not soon enough.
