Idyllic Afternoon...

Wednesday, June 05, 2013

I posted this in the Today's Run thread on the Sparky Marathoners' message board. I think it says something about the way people who try to take care of their bodies relate to each other.

Here in the US today was "National Running Day". I went to a railroad bed that has been converted to a paved fitness trail in Vestal NY. It is only two miles long, but well maintained, pretty, with wide flat grass covered shoulders, and it has restrooms at each end. The weather was perfect and there were many different forms of locomotion going on. I parked at one end and ran to the other and back while Judith (DW) biked it a few times. I saw walkers, runners, young and old wheelchair users, skateboarders, cyclists, and kids on tricycles and in strollers. I did not see one example of bad etiquette, one piece of litter, or even an accidental instance of two people trying to use the same space. It was really quite amazing. Without any written instruction everyone stayed to the right. Strangers communicated directional intent and good will. Slower users seemed to drift out of the way of the more enthusiastic with only ESP to guide them.

A couple miles from home, I turned the car over to Judith and ran the rest of the way to get in a total of 10K for the day. The only negative was that I broke my June streak of both running and cycling every day. I'll start again tomorrow.

That train sounds really nice. What a great way to celebrate National Running Day! There are some nice trails around here, but people litter and walk as a "wall," so it slows you down at parts.

That's a nice commemoration of National Running Day. I was unaware that yesterday was National Running Day until yesterday morning, by which point I had already committed it as a non-running day. Such is life. The reality of what I can do trumps the commemoration aspect.
