The whole state is against me!

Friday, July 05, 2013

Ok maybe not really the whole state, but it's funny that there are definite regional differences it seems!

I'm from NYC. 35 years born and raised. Although we're known for our fabulous pizza and our bagels, believe it or not for the most part we're VERY good in getting healthy stuff in.

Fast forward I move to Ohio. (Job offer for hubby, would have been dumb for us to not jump at it, plus he has family here so bonus)

I felt like a stranger in a strange land seeing how there are entire grocery aisles here devoted to various types of barbecue sauce!

Family holiday gatherings - my shock at the lack of vegetables! OR rather, there were vegetables, they were just well hidden in a casserole with all this cheese and bacon thrown in!

I did pretty good in at least breaking my hubbys-family in for that though, I bring my own steamed/grilled veggies or they have some on hand.

Yesterday, 4th of July - having guests over. They offer to bring dessert. Oh boy - dessert. Ack! So I thought to myself - well, how about fruit salad? A nice fresh fruit salad would be healthy and a heckuva lot better than cake or brownies or such! So ok - yes, bring dessert, fruit salad please!

Um. This did not go as I intended.

Fruit Salad in NYC = "Fresh Fruit, Cut Up"
Fruit Salad in Cincinnati = "Some Fresh Fruit, Some Canned Fruit, In a Heavy Syrup and Sprinkle Lots of Sugar On Top"

I TRIED!

Back to the drawing board lol, I will at least make TODAY a great one!

I notice things are changing. I think more people are putting healthy things at their get togethers. Bring something like that yourself. It might catch on. Crhis

Oh hey, at least it wasn't that midwest fruit salad - canned fruit mixed in with whipped cream and coconut!

Can you tell I spent a year in Minnesota? I was shocked that you couldn't buy fresh fish anywhere!!!

It sounds like you're adapting well. I went through the same thing with my husband's family. They just don't eat green things. I make them, my husband and I eat them, the family gags a little bit and we move on. It takes a lot of work to be healthy around them, but it's a part of life if they're going to be in your life and it sounds like they're worth it. You'll find your rhythm. ;-)

I never understand the lack of veggies at cookouts! You can counter that by chopping veggies into a grill basket, and bringing that as your contribution to the party. Once they get used to delicious grilled zucchini and peppers, you've got them hooked! :)

But who uses canned fruit in fruit salad?! Aiyeee!!!!

Ouch - that's a shame! Maybe you can make the next fruit salad to teach your new friends another way. I use some canned fruit, but always canned in its own juice (like pineapple tidbits). I add a little sour cream to make a sauce - maybe that's a southern thing? Hmm - I never really thought about regional food differences?
